Áile Aikio (Luobbal-Sámmol-Aimo Áile by her Sámi name) is an Indigenous Sámi museum professional. She has been curator in in the Sámi Museum Siida in Anár/Inari in Finland since 2005, first in Collections and since 2016 as curator of exhibitions and museum pedagogy. Aikio has a master’s degree on Ethnology and she is a Doctoral Candidate in the University of Lapland. The theme for her Ph.D. dissertation is how to Sámify Museum, what would be the Sámi way to present Sámi culture in Indigenous Sámi Museum. Aikio is interested in indigenizing and decolonizing processes, especially how to indigenize cultural heritage management and how cultural heritage institutions, as museum, could be transformed from sites of colonization to sites for the Indigenous peoples.
Erich Berger is an artist, curator and cultural worker based in Helsinki/Finland. He directs the Finnish Society of Bioart where he develops opportunities which create interdisciplinary encounters and work situations between professionals from art, natural science, technology and the humanities. In his work Berger recognizes science and technology as fundamental transformative powers of our life world. His artistic interests lie in processes and feedback structures, which he investigates through installations, situations, performances and interfaces. Throughout his artistic practice he has explored the materiality of information and information and technology as artistic material. His current interest in issues of deep time and hybrid ecology led him to work with geological processes, radiogenic phenomena and their socio-political implications in the here and now. Berger has exhibited widely in various museums, galleries and major media-art events in Europe and worldwide, like Ars Electronica Linz (AT), File Festival Sao Paulo (BR), Sonar Barcelona (ES), or the Venice Biennial (IT). His works received several awards and prices from Prix Ars Electronica (AT), the Bawarian Broadcasting Station and ZKM (DE), Vida Telefonica (ES), LABoral (ES) or Files Prix (BR).
Lee-Ann Tjunypa Buckskin is the Deputy Chair, Australia Council for the Arts. Miss Buckskin is the Aboriginal Strategy Executive Consultant at the South Australian Film Commission and member of the National Museum of Australia’s Indigenous Advisory Committee. Miss Buckskin is Co-Chair of Tarnanthi Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Visual Arts, Adelaide and Juror of Contemporary Adelaide Design Competition. Miss Buckskin is a Narungga, Wirangu, Wotjobaluk woman.
Mario A. Caro is a critic, historian, and curator of contemporary Indigenous art. His research topics include the representation of Indigenous cultures within the museum; the visual production of an “aesthetics of nostalgia” within photographic practices; and a critique of art historical methodologies as colonial discourses. He has curated national and international exhibitions and was the curator of exhibitions at Alaska House, New York in Soho, NY. He is a Lecturer in the MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology, and has taught at institutions including Otis School of Art and Design, Indiana University, where he held the post of Public Scholar for Civic Engagement, and New York University as a fellow in the John W. Draper Interdisciplinary Program in Humanities and Social Thought. He is also the founding editor of InVisible Culture: An Electronic Journal for Visual Culture. His work within the academy complements his endeavors within various arts communities to promote global cultural exchanges. He is a former president of Res Artis and continues to dedicate his efforts in promoting the mobility of artists.
Oron Catts is the Director of SymbioticA, The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia. He is an artist, designer, researcher and curator who is considered as a pioneer in the field of biological art project. In 2000 he co-founded SymbioticA, at The University of Western Australia. Under Catts’ leadership SymbioticA won the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007),the WA Premier Science Award (2008) and became a Centre for Excellence in 2008. In 2009 Catts was recognised by Thames & Hudson’s “60 Innovators Shaping our Creative Future” book in the category “Beyond Design”, and by Icon Magazine (UK) as one of the top 20 Designers, “making the future and transforming the way we work”. Catts was a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School, a visiting Scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University, a Visiting Professor at the School of Art, Design and Architecture, Aalto University, Helsinki, a Visiting Professor of Design Interaction and later a Professor at Large in Contestable Design at The Royal College of Arts, London. His work was exhibited and collected by museums such as MoMA NY, Mori art Museum, NGV, GoMA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Ars Electronica, National Art Museum of China and more. His work was covered by The NY Times, Washington Post, Wired, New Scientist, Time, Newsweek and other TV, radio, print and online media.
Taru Elfving is a curator and writer based in Helsinki, working as Head of Programme at Frame Contemporary Art Finland (2013-). Her practice focuses on nurturing transdisciplinary encounters and site‐sensitive artistic investigations with a long‐term commitment to the critical discourses on ecology and feminism. Her curatorial research includes Hours, Years, Aeons (Venice Biennale 2015), Frontiers in Retreat (HIAP 2013‐2018), Contemporary Art Archipelago CAA (Turku 2011, European Capital of Culture), and Towards a Future Present (LIAF, Norway 2008). Elfving has published an extensive body of writing internationally and co‐edited publications such as Altern Ecologies (Frame, 2016). Currently she is co‐editing an anthology on the politics and poetics of international artist residencies (Valiz, 2018). She holds a PhD from Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths University of London, and has been teaching theory in practice at Goldsmiths and many Nordic art academies. She continues to supervise artistic research at the University of the Arts Helsinki.
Frederik Hardvendel, who has an artistic, creative educational background as graphic designer, is Director of the Danish Art Workshops. The organization is additionally from 2019 opening the new official Danish residency programme called MALTAIR from a location in Jutland. Frederik has worked for many years managing creative enterprises in Denmark and abroad. Frederik has been in the management of consultancy agency Advice A/S, Key Account in Format & Partners, Bangkok as well as Head of Design in DR, Danish Broadcasting Corporation. Frederik works occasionally as a professional advisor to creative companies and has for years been Chairman at the International Ceramic Research Centre and in the steering committee for interdisciplinary leadership in the Ministry of Culture, Denmark. He has recently joined the board of upcoming Art Hub Copenhagen.
Aira Huovinen is curator of exhibitions in Rovaniemi Art Museum since 2016. She also takes part in art education, international projects and publishing. She has a master’s degree in graphic design from University of Lapland and she has also graduated from University of Jyväskylä where she majored in art history. Rovaniemi Art Museum is the northernmost art museum in EU. The museum’s essential focus of exhibitions, art education and research is the northern dimension. Rovaniemi Art Museum is part of the international cooperation network covering the circumpolar area, Northern Art Network (NAN).
Mami Katsuya is Program Director of Kyoto Art Center. She graduated from Hiroshima City University (B.A. in International studies). Has completed Kawashima Textile School in 2010. She had been an artist-in-residence coordinator of Kyoto Art Center, a curator of Yuuhisai Koudoukan Foundation, and currently is in charge of Artist-in-Residence program and exhibition program at Kyoto Art Center. Katsuya focus on networking of residencies in Japan and coordinating many symposiums and discussions about artist residencies. She is also a member of committee of Higashiyama Artists Placement Service, and program advisor of Art Camp Tango.
Rangi Kipa was born in Christchurch and raised just south of Waitara on the Wai-o-Ngona river and began his career as a carver, graduating from the Maraeroa Carving School, Porirua. He holds a Bachelor of Social Sciences from Waikato University and a Masters of Maori Visual Arts from Massey University. He was the recipient of the $65,000.00, Creative New Zealand Object/Art Fellowship in 2006 and earned the honour of being awarded Te Waka Toi 2004 inaugural Artist in Residence to Noumea. He has received numerous awards and has lectured widely on contemporary Maori art and design practice at the Massey University in Wellington and Palmerston North.Kipa has exhibited throughout New Zealand, Canada and the United States and has works in major collections in New Zealand and overseas. Customarily trained, he has spearheaded and participated in the revival of the contemporary expressions of taonga puoro, ta moko, whakairo adornment art and waka. His postgraduate studies have provided him with new ways to interpret ideas in his art and given him a critical base to develop his own ideas and cross over the customary boundaries of art genres into contemporary sculptural expression. His art practice ranges from, fine ethnographic whale teeth and bone works, Corian® talismans to contemporary sculptures in a range of media on a monumental scale. Recently Kipa has had 2 major shows in the U.S. In October 2007 he was invited as part of a curated show: ‘Star Power’ to commemorate the inaugural opening of the New Denver Museum of Contemporary Art. In May 2008 he had his first international Solo show at Goff & Rosenthal Dealer Gallery in New York.
Riikka Koivula is a senior programme advisor at the Creative Europe Desk Finland, providing information on the EU’s Creative Europe Programme at the national level. Before joining CED Finland in 2010 she worked in several cultural organizations such as Tero Saarinen Company, Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation and FRAME Finnish Fund for Art Exchange. She holds a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences from The University of Helsinki.
Timo Koivurova is research professor, director of Arctic Centre and the chair of Lapland Arctic Council Host Committee. Timo Koivurova has specialized in various aspects of international law applicable in the Arctic and Antarctic region. In 2002, Koivurova’s doctoral dissertation “Environmental impact assessment in the Arctic: a Study of International Legal Norms” was published by Ashgate. Increasingly, his research work addresses the interplay between different levels of environmental law, legal status of indigenous peoples, law of the sea in the Arctic waters, integrated maritime policy in the EU, the role of law in mitigating/adapting to climate change, the function and role of the Arctic Council in view of its future challenges and the possibilities for an Arctic treaty. He has been involved as an expert in several international processes globally and in the Arctic region and has published on the above-mentioned topics extensively.
Irmeli Kokko is a lecturer (Art and Society) at the University of the Arts Helsinki, Academy of Fine Arts. Her research interest and field of activities include international artists’ residencies. She has published articles on residencies mainly in Finland and has had positions of trust and mandates of expertise nationally and internationally, for example, Res Artis board-member 1999-2001; Nordic Council of Ministers expert-group member Module to support Residencies 2007-2011. In 1998 she initiated the Helsinki International Artist Program – HIAP.
Tina Kuckkahn-Miller has served as the founding director of the “House of Welcome” Longhouse Education and Cultural Center at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, USA since 1996. The Longhouse’s mission is to promote indigenous arts and cultures through a variety of programs, including: an international indigenous artist-in-residence program, Toi Sgwigwialt, in partnership with the government of New Zealand (Creative New Zealand and Toi Maori Aotearoa); hosting the international Gathering of Indigenous Visual Artists of the Pacific Rim in 2001 and 2017; and building the Indigenous Arts Campus, a series of artmaking studios designed upon indigenous architectural and cultural concepts. With degrees in education and law from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Tina regularly teaches in the Master of Public Administration Program. Tina serves on the Indigenous Program Council at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, as well as the Board of Directors for the Waaswaaganing Living Arts and Culture Center in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin. Tina received a “Bridge Builder” award from Women of Color Empowered in 2013, the President’s Leadership Award from The Evergreen State College in 2014, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Warms Springs Tribe of Oregon in 2015. Affiliated with both the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (enrolled) and the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribes, Tina works with a multitude of tribal peoples and artists from throughout the Pacific Rim in her roles at Evergreen.
Riitta Kuusikko is a chief curator of Rovaniemi Art Museum. Her expertise is on contemporary art. She has curated many international exhibitions, recently Flying Stories (2011-2012), Pathway (2013), Sami Contemporary (2014), Place of Origin – Contemporary Native Art from Alaska (2018). Riitta Kuusikko is responsible for the collections of Rovaniemi Art Museum. The main collection of the Rovaniemi Art Museum is called Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation Art Collection. It is one of the most important contemporary art collections in Finland. Representing a cross-section of Finnish art from the 1940s to the present, it comprises over 3 000 works. The collection enjoys a reputation of exceptional quality. The collection is continuously on show with different thematic selections curated by Riitta Kuusikko.
Lucy Latham joined Julie’s Bicycle in September 2013 to work on the strategic integration of environmental sustainability within artistic and cultural venues and activities. She works across a variety of consultancy projects and creative programmes, focusing on policy, operational best practice, engagement and cultural change. She also coordinates Julie’s Bicycle’s creative campaigns and supports the development of its leadership and professional development programmes. Lucy has a BSc in Environmental Science and an MSc in Social and Political Theory. Julie’s Bicycle is a London based charity that supports the creative community to act on climate change and environmental sustainability.
Rebekka Lewin is the Head of Communications at the Danish Art Workshops. She is a cultural scientist and holds a master in Modern Culture and Cultural Management from Copenhagen University. Her professional skills imply cultural journalism, PR/communications, and web administration. She has a fundamental interest in arts and aesthetics and makes an effort to communicate to a broad audience combining words and visual media. Rebekka has been around several of the different fields within arts and culture such as performing arts and broadcasting. Among others she has previously been working as a producer in the two Danish dance companies, Recoil Performance Group and Gazart, and as the Head of Production in the TV documentary company, The Compound.
Veronika Liebl is currently Director of Organization and Finance at the department Festival/Prix/Exhibitions of Ars Electronica. She studied economic and business science at Johannes Kepler University in Linz (graduated in 2010) with study visits at the Harvard University (US) and Université de Fribourg (CH). Since 2013 she is enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program for Innovation Management at LIMAK Linz – Austrian Business School. After finishing her studies she was engaged in various commercial employments, amongst others for the Austrian Economic Chamber. Since 2011 she is in charge of cultural management for the department Festival/Prix/Exhibitions at Ars Electronica Linz GmbH. In this capacity she is responsible for finances, human resources, public funding, internal operations and project management. Recently, she is mainly in control of all European collaboration projects under Creative Europe, Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ and executed in this position – together with her team – numerous EU projects both as project coordinator as well as a partner.
Esko Lotvonen has made a meaningful work in the field of regional development for years. He has become known as key figure in the Barents co-operation projects and promotional work for the City of Rovaniemi. He has worked as County Governor in the Regional Council of Lapland from 1995 to 2012 and as a Mayor in the City of Rovaniemi from 2012.
Coral Lu is an independent curator in China since 2009. In 2010 she founded DongDong and LuLu artist residency & art charity workshops. In 2016 Coral founded the China Association of Minority Art Residencies to promote Chinese indigenous cultures. At the same time, she started to organize the international nomadic cultures exchange exhibition Transcending Territories. In September 2017 the first Transcending Territories exhibition took place in Hohhot Inner Mongolia and was sub-titled ‘A multinational transmission of Mongolian spirit’. The second Transcending Territories exhibition takes place in Lhasa Tibet in September 2018 and is sub-titled ‘Mongolian and Tibetan culture exchange exhibition’. The third Transcending Territories exhibition will take place in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia in September 2019.
Antti Majava (b. 1977) is an artist working in multiple medias including installation, light works, photography, video, painting and writing. His main topics are the different aspects of human-nature and art-economy relationships. Majava works in Hyrynsalmi and Helsinki, Finland. He received his MFA from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki in 2008 and is working for a PhD in Faculty of Arts / Doctoral programme in interdisciplinary environmental sciences in University of Helsinki. Antti Majava is a co-founder of the Mustarinda Association and BIOS -Research Unit.
Marques Hanalei Marzan is a Hawaiian contemporary artist, a cultural practitioner, and the current cultural advisor for the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum, the Hawaiʻi State Museum of Cultural and Natural History. As an artist and cultural practitioner, Marzan bridges the traditions of the past with the innovations of the present, living the evolutionary continuity of culture. In his capacity as cultural advisor for Bishop Museum, he provides guidance to the staff and broader community on matters pertaining to cultural protocols, sensitivities, awareness, and education. Marzan has exhibited worldwide, in various museums and galleries throughout the US, Pacific region, and Europe and received numerous recognitions and awards, most recently receiving the Native Arts and Culture Foundation National Artist Fellowship in Traditional Arts in 2018.
Nadia Myre, (pronounced MEER), a member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg Nation, is a Montreal-based interdisciplinary artist of mixed Algonquin and French Canadian heritage whose work explores the politics of belonging by positioning her practice within a framework of resistance and resilience. In the last ten years her work has been exhibited on five continents, ten countries and in over 100 exhibitions––20 of which have been solos. She has participated in international biennales (China, Australia, Canada), as well as key group exhibitions. Myre’s work is collected in over 25 institutions in Canada, United States and France and can be viewed in the permanent exhibitions of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Musée de la civilization, Musée nationale des beaux arts du Québec, and the National Gallery of Canada. In 2014, Myre was the recipient of the prestigious Sobey Art Award (for artists under 40), and currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Art Practice at Concordia University. She is a member of the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective, of which she has been co-chair for the last 5 years.
Lea O’Loughlin manages Acme Studios International Residencies Programme (Acme IRP) and is Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Res Artis. Working with international artists and liaising with governments and foundations to maximise their investment in London cultural residencies. A vital part of her role is to build strong and sustainable relationships between residency funders, visiting artists and a wide cross-section of communities both within and beyond the cultural sphere. She has a history of developing residencies, promoting international dialogue and critical exchange, connecting people and networks and providing practical guidance and advice to artists and arts organisations. Holding an MA in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art London and Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of South Australia her previous experience includes working with The Royal British Society of Sculptors, The Florence Trust, Tate, Gasworks, Cubitt Artists (United Kingdom), MoMA (United States) and Adelaide Central Gallery & Studios (Australia).
Eliza Roberts is the inaugural Executive Director of Res Artis focused on fundraising, public profile and strategy for the organisation. Eliza served on the Res Artis Board of Directors from 2012 – 2016, including a 2 year term as Vice-President from 2014. For the past 6 years Eliza worked as Arts Residencies Manager at Asialink, Australia’s largest and most long-standing artist residency program in the region. Eliza has diverse experience in the arts industry, having worked at a range of local and international institutions and organisations including Christie’s auction house in London, The Ian Potter Museum of Art and Artbank. Eliza speaks intermediate level Indonesian and holds a MA Art Curatorship and BA Creative Arts, both from the University of Melbourne.
Tiina Sanila-Aikio or Paavvâl Taannâl Tiina (born 1983 in Sevettijärvi, Inari) is the President of the Sámi Parliament of Finland. Sanila-Aikio has been a member of the Sámi Parliament since 2012. Before her presidency, Sanila-Aikio worked as a teacher of Skolt Sámi language and culture at the Sámi Education Institute in Inari. Moreover, she has been active in promoting the language and culture of the Skolt Sámi, for example providing teaching materials. Sanila-Aikio is also known as an artist who has performed in many ways, both in traditional and in modern ways of music. The other main occupation of the Sanila-Aikio family is reindeer herding. She lives in Inari with her husband and daughter.
Ika Sienkiewicz-Nowacka is Head of the artistic residencies department at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art. Ika is a manager of culture, curator and founder of the U–jazdowski Residency Programme. She graduated from Inter-Faculty Individual Studies in the Humanities (University of Warsaw) and holds the European Diploma for Culture Management (Brussels). Member of the Programme Council of Akademie Schloss Solitude and Res Artis. Her research interests centre on the significance of residencies within the fields of artistic and institutional practice. She carries out projects in which visual arts become a tool of social change and are used to shape and promote alternative models of social development.
Sofie Ilsøe Sjöblom is advisor at the Nordic Culture Point, a cultural institution and part of the official Nordic cooperation located in Helsinki, Finland. She is responsible for Funding for Artist Residencies, which is part of the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture. Sofie has a background in art history and modern culture. Before moving to Helsinki she has primarily worked in arts education in Denmark.
Päivi Tahkokallio is Founder and CEO of Tahkokallio Design+, a design thinking agency from Lapland, Finland. Päivi, with her track record on strategic design has been called the mother of Arctic Design, a design approach to support sustainable development of the Arctic. She helped the city of Rovaniemi to partner up with Helsinki, the World Design Capital in 2012, and was the catalyst of inclusion of Arctic Design in the national Arctic Strategy of Finland. Päivi has extensive experience in the inclusive approach to design. During the 20 years with the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto ARTS) and The National R&D Centre for Healthcare and Wealth, Päivi became an international advocate of Design for All. Päivi is President-elect of BEDA, The Bureau of European Design Associations, and Vice President of Ornamo Art and Design Finland. She is the Chair of Design Committee of Lapland Chamber of Commerce and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce (FRSA, London, UK).
Antti Tenetz is an artist and experimental documentarist from Finland. His work centers on multi-disciplinairy cross overs between art and science in order to study the relation between human and nature. His themes range from the Siberian bear cult to digital representation of sensory systems of animals. His work often makes use of modern technology such as drones and satelite tracking. He focuses on experiences and relations with nature, privacy, law, landscape and natural values of cohabitation with other species in shaping our natural world. Tenetz have been one of the founders and head of curatorial team for Finnish Cultural Foundations Pohjavirta project that has been biggest ever regional project of the Finnish Cultural Foundation (2013-2015). At the moment he works as first ever regional artist of biological arts for Art Promotion Centre of Finland.
Paula Tuovinen is the new director of Arts Promotion Centre Finland. Previously she worked as vice-rector of University of the Arts Helsinki. In 2005 – 2012 she worked as rector of Theatre Academy Helsinki. She has a long career as contemporary dance artist and dance teacher. She has MA in cultural anthropology and Executive Master of Business Administration. She is also educated as yoga instructor. Besides her administrative work, she continues her dance career occasionally.
Kirsi Väkiparta is a Special Advisor at the Arts Promotion Centre Finland since 2008. She works with state support for mobility, artist-in-residencies, art festivals and multidisciplinary art. Her background is in art history and the visual arts. She has a long working experience in the Finnish visual art field. Previously she has worked e.g. as the director of the Distribution Centre for Finnish Media Art AV-ARKKI, assistant editor for the Nordic Art Review Siksi/Nu, programme coordinator for the Contemporary Art Museum Kiasma, curator for the Finnish Fund for Art Exchange FRAME and educational curator for the Helsinki Art Museum.
Soile Veijola is Professor of Cultural Studies of Tourism based at Multidimensional Tourism Institute (MTI) at Faculty of Social Sciences at University of Lapland, in Rovaniemi, Finland. She did her Phd in sociology at the University of Helsinki on gender, local knowledges and mobile subjectivities. During her years in Rovaniemi, she has explored tourism as work, the tourist dwelling and tourism architecture, silence and slowness, gender in the coding society, and future tourist initiatives for ‘the undressed places of the global north’. She has led research teams, and facilitated during several decades interdisciplinary Writing Seminars on accessible, functional and ethical design and narration of academic theses. Veijola’s most current research interest is participatory planning in tourism enabled by new methodologies, philosophies, aesthetics, and technologies of measuring tourism impacts in local milieus.
Leena Vuotovesi is CEO of the development company Micropolis Ltd. located close to the Arctic Circle as well as the President of the Board of Directors at Res Artis. Previously, Leena was the executive director of KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre running a tailored residency program. Leena has been the representative of Res Artis at the board of Culture Action Europe. She participated also in the work of the EU commission’s OMC working group on mobility of artists as an external expert. In Finland she is active at The Finnish Cultural Foundation Association.
