The ART of Sound-Turn off that noise!  Call for Sound Artists/Installation/Film/Musicians/Songwriters // 50-100% grant for –accommodations in Costa Rica in 2020

We will offer discounted housing/studio space to artists in media that are willing to explore sound in sensitive areas and the effect of human noise. Artists are the journalists of our times, many are able to create complex yet moving works that can shift perception about difficult situations. In our region of the world, there numerous farms, tourism, etc that contribute massive amounts of sound pollution. Perhaps not quite as dire as actual climate change or government/religious fanaticism, yet, it perpetuates a modicum of “I don’t care, it’s all about me”, and the raging entitlement in our society.

We are curious to see if there are sound magicians who would like to join our creative jungle lab and delve deep in the imbalance of human noise and consequences for wildlife of all types. Many sounds in the cloud forest are subtle, and equally in our the seas at our nearby coast, the aquatic life. Many beings use sound to share news, just like humans, yet, with the overshadowing of metallic machines (vehicles, weed wackers, saws, government sonic, boats, planes, raves, wifi/5G, etc), often navigation gets lost and the conversation between wildlife is aborted, not sent, not heard, etc. Many wildlife beings are already struggling to procreate, to build their social structures resulting from overdevelopment, unruly corporate monocrop farming, and climate disastors.

Are you an artist interested in deciphering the complex language of the oropendula bird?  Or are you willing to remind humans of their ‘song’, of their ability to contribute to the soundsphere of the planet rather than bash it.

As we gave ifferem art has a way to investigate, create humor and to invoke change of perception.  We look forward to learning your ideas of how to present sound to the general public and guide them into deeper consideration of mutual respect for all beings.

Residency program

Our Center is wildly unique; it combines ecology, community, mutual cooperation and the arts at a fantastic location within remarkable facilities. We aim to change the relationship of the arts (moving beyond art as strictly commodity or objectification) towards a way to balance the dire situation on the planet, by providing promising interaction between communities and artists that benefit and heal the natural ecosphere.

Accommodations/workshop/studio space

We provide rustic, comfortable, imaginative habitats for artists to create and imagine easily with their muse. Lodging is located in a hilly environment with access to group kitchen.  We have 5-shared bathrooms.  From private/shared cabins to lofts, or dorm rooms, we have a place that is right for all types of artists.  Housing is shared only on agreement and is private unless otherwise stated.

The cabins are suitable for live/work space, and we have separate workshops available for construction/clay/wood working, etc.  Dance, theatre can be held in the common building, our dance tower, outdoor amphitheater, or our elevated tree platform.  Film/Photography is possible anywhere.  Writing can be facilitated in a number of spaces that include our screened in Kiosk (also for photography).

Fees and Support

Awarded artist will receive a cabin for 50-100% discount for the duration of the agreed stay from 2 weeks to 3 months (up to $3000 value).  ***Artists will be responsible for travel and food.   ***A $175 carbon footprint/ cleaning/ damage recovery fee is charged to each artist and guarantees a reserved space for agreed time *(note: we can make a special arrangement to deduct this fee from residency fees upon arrival and successful completion of the residency requirements).

***note: Artists may also work on personal, individual projects during their stay as long as the writing proposal is completed.

Expectations

We are seeking to work with artists who would like to join our collective in the cloud forest and create temporary and permanent works that exemplify the need to consider human noise in sensitive environments. Our Center is located between Osa Peninsula to Parque Amistad and we have Golfo Dulce below us.  Due to this location we experience many migrating, breeding/ wandering, pollinators, etc that seek refuge on their walk/flyabouts.   We believe that the arts can help educate, and change hearts on the importance balancing sounds in our worldsphere.  We will award an artist(s) with 2 weeks to 3 months residency at discounted rate in exchange for a magical story that inspires the world to consider their song with a little less clankity clank.  The visual narrative can be creative, imaginative or journalistic, yet it is hoped the piece will inspire governments and the public to integrate better protection and also to encourage ecotourism visitors to participate in projects such as reforestation… and become *wary of adding to the noise in sensitive biospheres while traveling.   We have unique ways to assist the artist with a variety of materials, including various sound locations, night cameras, past recordings of sounds, etc.  The sculptures can be integrated into our Center’s facilities, or, with permission, be temporarily or permanently placed in a nearby pueblo.

Application:

We welcome all types of ideas.  We understand that the work may be flushed out differently or even changed while at the Center.  Therefore, we seek to hear your inspiration on why this project appeals to your compassion.  When sending your proposal, please include any past sculptures that reveal your ability to inspire and influence through your graphic displays.  We encourage you to approach ministry of cultures, patreon.com or other donors to assist in your residency fees/travel/food.  We will notify the artist of the award and assist with a professional letter of invitation.

Send resume, references, and time-frame/season of residency requirements from 2 weeks to 3 months. Jaguar777luna@gmail.com re: Mission Jaguar
