Kristinestad Artists’ Residency is a non-profit and artist/volunteer run programme in the picturesque town of Kristinestad on the Finnish West coast, offered in cooperation with the local cultural affairs office, the Spectra art association and the Hemslöjdsföreningen craft association. There will be eight international artists in residence at the same time.

We are inviting artists for a one-month stay between 2 and 29 August 2020 – a period ideal for experiencing Nordic late summer. August in Finland means forests full of bilberries, raspberries and mushrooms: if you are into nature, silence and slow living, this setting is for you. For peace to concentrate on a personal project with few things to distract you, look no further. Available resources and sources of inspiration include local vernacular architecture and traditional crafts. We encourage reflection on issues and practices that are central to the local and Finnish context.

We welcome exhibitions, shows and collaborations with the local community, especially with schools, which open their doors after the summer holiday in mid-August.

Duration of residency
4 weeks
Accommodation
There is a variety of accommodation options, mostly in wooden buildings: at the Spectra art association, in private houses and a private flat. Kitchens and bathrooms are normally shared. A full list of options will be available to those accepted.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Programme open to all creative professionals, but practitioners in visual arts, craft and design are particularly welcome. We have weaving looms and equipment for textile dyeing, linocutting, woodworking and pottery. Project assistance and feedback available before and throughout the residency.

At the art association: two individual studios (12 m²) and one shared studio (20 m²). At the craft association: desks, looms and ceramics facilities in large, shared spaces.

The residency fee is 600 euro. We offer no grants, but selected candidates will be issued a letter of support for seeking grants elsewhere.
