Studio Faire is an intimate contemporary art space in South West France, providing residencies for all creative practitioners.
Studio Faire is now accepting applications for a 2 week residency from 16 – 29 April 2020 (other dates may also be available).
The residency is based in a beautiful ‘Maison de maître’ built around 1830 and still retaining its period characteristics. Situated in the market town of Nérac, in the stunning Lot-et-Garonne region, on the northern edge of Gascony, here you will find the ‘real’ unspoilt France. Medieval Villages are surrounded by green rolling hills that lead your eye to the horizon via fruit orchards and vines. The perfect place to slow down and focus.
Your hosts have many skills between them. Colin Usher is a Photographer and Digital Media expert and Julia Douglas a Mixed Media Artist (specialising in Textiles) and Web Designer. They are also well connected in the area and willing to share their knowledge and contacts with you during your stay. There will be two other residents at Studio Faire during your stay with whom you can share information and ask for feedback.
The successful applicant will be provided with an art studio and double bedroom with desk and garden views.
The walled garden is enclosed, offering private, shaded space for reading or drawing under the mature trees, or for dining with fellow residents on the patio. Beyond that there is a wild park full of fruit trees, a perfect hideaway!
Even though the property sits on a main road, the large rooms and enclosed acre of garden at the back give a feeling of isolation and are ideal places for focused work. The town is just a 10 minutes stroll away over the beautiful river Baïse, which meanders by just a five-minute walk from the house and is the perfect place to stretch your legs and clear your mind.

This self-directed residency is a self-funded residency. Fees include a private room and studio, plus shared bathroom, kitchen, dining room and gardens.
Studio Faire offers all creative practitioners a change of pace and the space to create.
Duration of residency
Residencies can last from a minimum of 1 week to a maximum of 4 weeks.
A choice of three private double bedrooms are available to residents. These rooms share a shower room with toilet. Accommodation is provided on a self-catering basis.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
Trestle tables, an easel and a table top easel are provided in the studio and there is sink for cleaning out brushes and so forth. There is a blank white wall (240cm wide), suitable for taping up works on paper and the centre of the room has a concrete floor, suitable for laying out larger works. It’s about 3m wide and nearly 8m long.
Studio / Workspace
During these two weeks, the resident will be allocated the ‘Garage’ studio plus a double bedroom with a desk and garden views.
Though the studio is offered for your sole use to one resident, the other residents will pass through it from time-to-time to access other rooms in the property or to use the fridge and washing machine, also situated within the space.

Expectations towards the artist
As this is a self-funded residency, Studio Faire has no expectations towards the artist and hope that this supportive environment, without the pressure to produce, will aid creativity, experimentation and the development of new ideas.
