FEMINIST FIELD STUDIES

“Inspired by the consciousness-raising groups of second wave feminism in the States, the numerous projects that feminists have done with regard to the ‘house’ as a central metaphor (Judy Chicago’s Womanhouse; the Women’s Building; Carolee Schneemann’s “Parts of a Body House”; and the work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Senga Nengudi, Betty Saar), I plan to use the layout of the Château as a structuring framework for discussing and working with the many possible directions in which feminist studies and creative practice can go today.” Micol Hebron

Offering a 1-, 2-, or 3-week experience, LA based feminist activist, artist and Chapman University professor Micol Hebron will guide residents through a series of contemporary consciousness-raising and community-building activities, using the physical and metaphorical context of the Château. These sessions are open to adults of any age, nationality, gender identity, creative background, or feminist ideology (we welcome beginner feminists and feminist experts alike!).  Participants may sign up for any number of sessions. While each session will have the same general structure, the thematic focus will vary each week (so participants staying for two or three weeks will be able to engage in a progressive program, without redundancies).

The program will move from dark to light, passing through gray zones on the way. Starting in the cellar, we will work with notions of foundations, dive into the subconscious, rummage through our storage and memories, and learn in the darkness through sensory perception and extra-sensory perception. Next we move to the main floor where communal rooms such as the salon, library, dining room, and kitchen provide the opportunity to deconstruct the role of the feminine in once-upon-a-time bourgeois society as well as today. We’ll use our gray matter and our gut instincts to withdraw from and rewrite the traditional notions of nourishment, social activity, and the games people play.  Lastly, on the top floors, where bedrooms and studios are, we will sit upon clouds to discuss dreams, creativity, sex and sexuality. I hope that residents will find deeply engaging and useful content in each of the sessions, no matter what their specific personal and professional interests.
