Buinho offers a unique working experience in the historic town of Messejana, Southern Portugal. We are located in the sunniest region of Europe, just 1 hour and a half from Lisbon and other major cities.
In 2015 we created one of the very first rural FabLabs in Europe, and rapidly became a reference for multidisciplinary residency programs.
We provide provides five individual rooms for residency, private and shared studios and living spaces. Our residents have access to the fablab equipment and technical support, we provide weekly tutoring and workshops on 3D printing, laser cutting, robotics, among other disciplines.
Our artistic residencies encourage dialogue, exchange, and experimentation. They are process-based, allowing visiting artists to develop projects in response to the relationship with the local environment and community, or to conduct research benefiting from Buinho’s resources, and the daily life and environment of Messejana.
Buinho also offers some special programs and workshops to our residents, as the Precious Plastic Workshop (for recycling plastic), or our special education branch called Buinho Playground (digital empowerment of local children and seniors). Participants are encouraged to take the opportunity to further expand the possibilities of work, taking advantage of our unique capabilities and extended support.
We also encourage exchange and community based projects with the local population of Messejana, offering exhibitions, workshops and presentations for our artists in residency.
Applicants should send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:

Duration of residency
Minimum two weeks, maximum 3 months
The Buinho creative artist residency program provides private accommodation and shared work-spaces in two different locations: a) Sao Joao house is an XIX century shepherd’s house, remodelled in 2019 to offer a unique charm. It is located in the street of the museum, on top of a hill, offering from its garden a unique view over Messejana. It’s studios with high white walls and quiet environment offer the perfect setting for visual artists and writers. b) The second space, the Buinho main studio and Fablab, is also a traditional house. The house was entirely renovated to provide a modern studio style residence. The building is divided into three spaces so that you can generate ideas, share them in a social area and importantly create a real product in the Fablab. The Fablab is equipped with tools and machines (workstations, laser cutter, 3D printers, CNC’s, vinyl cutters, etc.) to enhance the possibilities of experimentation of our residents. Each house is fully equipped and provide private accommodation to each resident.
Disciplines, work equipment and assistance
We can host a very wide group of disciplines due to the unique conditions of our studios and equipment. Has one of the few fablabs offering a residency program, we can provide access to digital prototyping equipment like laser cutter or 3D Printer that can expand the possibilities of experimentation. We also have more conventional metal and wood workshops, besides regular studios for visual artists. Some of our accommodations are in quiet and inspiring locations that fit quite well the necessities of writers and researchers. Recently we built a set of Precious Plastic Machines and now can offer Artists in Residency the opportunity to work in projects with recycled plastic. For a more detailed list of equipment please contact us by email or consult our website.
Studio / Workspace
As previously explained Buinho offers different spaces with access to specific equipments. The main two locations are the Buinho Fablab and the Sao Joao house more dedicated to writers and visual artists. Other options include the Precious Plastic Workshop, the school makerspace, and even the ethnographic museum that already hosted special residency projects from our residents. We offer both shared and private studios.

The fees for 2019-20 are 150€ per week or 600€ per month. The minimum period of stay is 2 weeks, and the maximum is 3 months.
Expectations towards the artist
