Name of Residency: LOW AIR residency

Vilnius city dance theatre Low Air enters a new direction of a creative development in order uncover the power of networking among artists and dance related practitioners.

Low Air residency is open to professional dance artists or dance ensembles or stage directors with a strong choreographic idea from all over the world.

The program is suited for local and international dance related artists and practitioners: dancers, choreographers, dance critics, cultural managers, and academics, providing them with the opportunity to work in the heart of Vilnius while developing individual projects and immersing themselves in the region??s creative sphere.

Residencies may be for the following purpose(s):

  • Early developing and exploration of an artistic idea;
  • Taking an already developed idea to the next stage;
  • Explore a completely new direction of your artistic work to change the direction of your career as an artist.

Low Air residency selects the residents through a focus on artistic quality, depth, and innovation. We also have a particular interest in artists who want to interact with the host (partner venues or high schools) and the public connected to the host (students, artists or general public).

We customize each residency after an analytic dialogue to explore your artistic focus in the residency and secure that the residency design supports this focus.

Description of Organisation:

LOW AIR

To look for the meaning of Low Air, one has to search somewhere between the constant paradox (as if the Air could ever be Low) and the ever-existing thirst for experiencing and under-standing reality (as if there is never enough of Air). The first reference point is forcing us to live through the discrepancies, question the norms and ways of thinking; the second one insists on always feeling the urge to create, it ignites the constant search for meaning and at the same time it is a reminder that we all are merely small pieces of the never-ending quest for creativity.

Airida Gudaitė and Laurynas Žakevicius established the company Low Air in 2012 as the first urban dance theatre in Lithuania. They aim to uncover the artistic potential of street dance and introduce it to theatre lovers everywhere. Whilst experimenting with and combining different styles of dance and movement languages, choosing themes for dance theatre productions and educating young dancers on stage, Low Air develops and builds a community of professionals around it.

While creating and premiering six professional dance theatre performances to the audience, awarded with the prestigious Lithuanian highest theatre award Golden Stage Cross, awarded with Borisas Dauguvietis Earring for both the successful research and development of a new stage forms connecting urban dance and theatre and for the pedagogical work which changes a face of Lithuanian contemporary dance, awarded by Lithuanian ministry for culture with Young Artist Prize, and with the great attention of foreign critics and professionals on tours, Low Air 2017 received the title of Vilnius City Dance Theatre and even more responsibility to promote and represent the city of Vilnius and Lithuania in the world.

40% of all Low Air theatre company performances are performed abroad. Performances have been presented at major art festivals, summits and exclusive scenes in Israel, France, Germany, USA, Sweden, Iceland, Scotland, United Kingdom, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Italy, Greenland, Bulgaria, Austria, China, and all over Lithuania.
