AZAN Space

Name of Residency: AZAN // Tomaz Hipolito Studio

AZAN residency program aims to welcome artists and introduce them to the Lisbon art scene with the feeling of a shared studio where artists can collaborate, share ideas and develop their work and research. Dialogue and experimentation are encouraged and projects related to the studio and its surroundings are welcomed. The key is to bring artists into a cultural context different from their own, in which they can thrive on cultural and social discourse and explore their own work, giving artists the opportunity to present their work and research.

There are two formats to the residency program: living studio (lodging and studio space) that can only accommodate one person at a time and day studio (no accommodation, only studio space). Both residencies work by spontaneous application, subject to approval and availability.

Our team will work with each resident in a supportive environment providing curatorial and production support. We can provide information about openings, art events and suppliers, maximizing the exposure of each resident in the city.

Residents are encouraged to organize a talk, a work presentation, a happening, a pop-up exhibition during their stay and participate in the zines project. All the events are organized between the artist and AZAN team, in a case-by-case basis.

Description of Organisation:

AZAN contemporary art is an artist-run project that includes studios, residencies and a program of events such as open days, exhibitions, talks and performances. The exhibition meets the working artist, with experimentation, research and reflection on artistic practices. Based in an industrial building in Marvila, the south-east of Lisbon, with satellite spaces in Quinta de Molha Pão, Sintra, and Sete Cidades, Azores, the main focus of AZAN is to build a network and location for creating an independent program, including the resident artists, national and international artists.
