Fundacion Flaquer is firmly grounded in the concept of dynamic and sustainable creative activity as the way to engage the world around us. Through our efforts we seek to develop sustainable methods and practices with our work and with our very lives. We are interested in bringing people out of the usual and into this one-of-a-kind space to concentrate on their work.
In following with this purpose, we are offering a winter writers retreat that provides residents with uninterrupted time and space to write, (whether it’s starting the novel you’ve been dreaming of or finishing the draft revisions of your next publication) in an environment overflowing with harmony and inspiration.
(Note: we are open to other disciplines. Write us with your project and we will see if we can accommodate.)
The residency takes place at the remote Mas Flaquer, located in the Northeast corner of Spain between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. It is an off-grid self sustainable estate built with love and dedication by artist/architect Jan F.A. Vandendorpe.
The buildings are powered by a solar powered grid and the rooms are heated by a central wood burning gasification stove. The water comes from the well, the food comes from the garden (as much as possible) and the nearest neighbor is a few kilometers away.
The winter months provide a unique time to observe the changes taking place in nature and focus on the things that matter. Residents have access to studio space, dining hall, shared kitchen, library and 12 hectares of land. Accommodation (private room with bathroom) and groceries are included, as is collection and return to the nearest public transport system.
Generally the residency is about you doing what you want to do. However, we often have dinner and drinks together in the common areas as well as taking the occasional trip to town. So you are able to be as sociable or private as you like.
The nearest little village is called Cantallops. They have one small grocery store and one restaurant/bar. It takes about 30 minutes to walk there from the farm. Above Cantallops is La Requesens which is an old castle that you can visit. It is surrounded by the Alberra national park. It is walkable (uphill) in about 2 hours.
We can arrange travel by car as needed. There is very limited bus service from Cantallops. The next nearest town is La Jonquera (8km down the mountain) where there are more shops and bus connections.
Residents are asked to contribute a small text outlining the nature of their practice whilst in residency. This will be posted to the Fundacion Flaquer website along with a link to the artists website.
