The Freezer is a professional theatre and social hostel in Rif, a very small town on Sn_ÑÉfellsnes peninsula, west coast Iceland.
This residency opened in the summer of 2014 and offers stage artists and musicians an opportunity to work on their art in close proximity to breathtaking nature and the magnificent Sn_ÑÉfellsj_Ñkull glacier, which has been a source of great inspiration for artists from all over the world for centuries.
The Freezer?s premises are situated in a renovated fish factory which has been turned into a culture centre and hostel, where the hostel buisness operates as a sort of an engine for creating art and culture, for locals and travellers in the area.
We offer two homemade studio spaces to be used for visiting artists. The smaller one is 100m2 long and used to serve as the actural freezer of the fish factory. The larger space is a 240m2 studio space with a big stage for concerts and performances. This space used to house packing and storing spaces in the past.
Our conditions for allowing artists to stay at our residency in that they, in exchange, help our with the daily cleaning of our premises every day of the residency. This work happens in the mornings and takes 1-3 hours, depending on the time period
and the number of artists staying with us.
The Freezer can best be described as an creative engine that utilizes international tourism to generate income for creating art and producing cultural events.
We offer artists rehearsal- and performance spaces and a place to stay. The artists take care of their own travel- and living expenses.
In the end of the residency period our artist present their work to the local community.
