Terra Vivente Art Studio

Terra Vivente operates on the belief that art should be brought to communities, that it should be interactive and engaging to artists and to members of communities who don??t have easy access to the conventional galleries and museums of large urban centres. Many small communities in Italy are semi-abandoned as youth migrate towards cities for education and work. Rejuvenating the smaller villages takes place when there is a strong enough pull for youth to stay or return. Cultural projects are an important step. Terra Vivente creates programming that brings international artists into these small communities, organizing interactive events, projects and exhibitions that are ultimately a cultural exchange. Because the venues are off the tourist route, artists have an immersive experience, learning about the language, food and cultural traditions in a natural way because these are lived experiences, not put on as tourist attractions. Working with the local town hall and organizations, Terra Vivente offers loosely thematic residencies based on salient features of the locality, whether it be cheese, paleontology, archaeology or locally sourced materials. Preference is given to artists who have a social practice, work with sustainable materials or food, or have a strong interest in collaboration or research. Emerging and established artists?Տ working in 2 and 3D media, performance, video, photography and sound are all welcome. See website for details on how to apply.
The deadline to apply is February 20.

Residency Programme since: 2012
Description of Organisation: Terra Vivente Art Studio offers residency programming to small groups of artists during the summer months, with the aim of to generating critical engagement with each other and the community. It exists to provide opportunities for artists to interact, with the potential to collaborate or to work independently. In 2019, there are three locations, Sardinia, the Taleggio Valley and Campania, each a small village in a predominantly rural setting, creating possibilities for community engagement, an immersive situation to explore traditions relating to food, language, archaeology, craft and more. It is an independent studio artists pay a fee to cover the cost of the accommodation, use of the studio and some transportation. Artists are encouraged to participate in group activities, which vary depending on specific interests, but could include shared meals, day trips and presentations or exhibitions.

Terra Vivente teams up, where possible, with the municipality and local, like-minded organizations. In Sardinia, IVYnode is our partner. Based in Barcelona, they have roots in Sardinia, and focus on creating art events, workshops and symposia. In Campania, our partner is Ru.De.Ri, an association with a focus on rural and sustainable public art projects.
