The Old Rock Factory offers self-funded residencies at the Rock Factory Print Studio in Blackpool.
Creatives can take the opportunity to use the unique environment of Blackpool as a base to explore and create work based on the UK’s most popular seaside resort. The town is rich in inspirational textures and images.
Your residency can be totally self-steered or you can take the opportunity to work alongside artists who work out of the Rock Factory.
You will have access to the Rock Factory screen print studio for the duration of your stay. The studio has 2 vacuum pump Kippax screen printing beds, an exposing unit for burning images onto screens, wash out and cleaning facilities, drying racks, and a dark room for screen coating.
The artist will have access to materials for the duration of the residency. This includes paper, inks, screens and coating solution. The fee for the residency covers studio time, material costs will be calculated depending on usage by the artist.
The artists at the studio have a sound working knowledge of screen printing including CMYK process printing and some experience working with fabric, and can assist in your day to day experience in the studio.
We can offer behind the scenes access to various historic venues in the town if this would be of interest to the creation of your work.
Please note: Due to the age and location of the building unfortunately there is no wheelchair access to the Print Studio.
Cost for 5 day residency – £200
Materials (paper, inks, screens, coating solution etc.) are extra and the costs will be calculated on usage.
Accommodation is not included in the residency cost but there is no shortage of places to stay in Blackpool, with prices to suit all pockets.
Fylde International Hotel
Carn Brae Hotel
The residency is based on a five day working week Monday to Friday, however this can be extended on consultation with the studio.
The Old Rock Factory is a creative hub located in the heart of Blackpool, the UK’s most popular holiday resort. It is a three storey former rock factory which houses a fully equipped screen print studio, an artists collective studio space, photography studio, and the offices of community art groups.
The Old Rock Factory print studio is run by screen printer Robin Ross, who has exhibited work around the world and was fundamental in the creation of the Sand, Sea & Spray street art festival, and some of the work from that project adorns the outside of the building.
