The São João Residencies Program is a rural residency, focusing on multidisciplinarity, experimentation and research.
We are located in a historic 19th century estate, near the city of Sao José do Vale do Rio Preto, in the countryside of Rio de Janeiro (3 hours drive from Rio). The project is open to individuals and collectives acting in different areas and medias.
Besides the wide common area in the main house and plenty of outdoor spaces, residents have at their disposal individual and collective studios to develop personal work and research, as well as sound equipment and musical instruments. For the sound residencies we mount a recording studio at the residency, and the support of sound engineers. During the residencies we organize collective activities, such as workshops, presentations in various formats and open talks, at the residency and in urban independent spaces as well. We also publish contents related to the residency through Deep editions.
The São João Residence has hosted about 100 artists from several countries and regions of Brazil, and, as results, we can mention published/released books (Powerpaola, Stefan Fähler), records (Sophia Knapp, BCBG…), exhibitions (“Obama Robot”, Dumbo Arts Center, NY Repetitits, Neon chocolate gallery, Berlin), presentations (Saracvra, Rio de Janeiro) and other formats.
Our Program proposes:
– Heightened contact with nature and reduction of outside stimuli and demands. Culture out of the cities.
– The creation of a heterogeneous and multidisciplinary group, regarding personal practices as well as conceptual approaches. Collective dynamics and procedures, the establishment of a collaborative calender. Horizontality.
-Experimentation. A frame to dive deep in the creative process.
Those interested must send the fully filled application form, plus portfolio and/or CV and/or mini bio, to the following email: email@example.com
We are an independent artist-run project. The residence was founded by Antonio Sobral in 2012, and have evolved in collaboration with Ruli Moretti, Flora Rebollo, Daniel Jablonski, Marina Marchesan and Amanda Costa. The program is actually run by Antonio Sobral and Veronica Daniela Cerrotta.
