A non-profit year-round rural residency centre based in an historic villa built for a clockmaker in 1911. Five acres of land. Located next to a national wildlife centre / native bird reserve.

Our residency centre provides

– studio (15 sqm) with mezzanine floor

– studio (12 sqm) in a Norwegian-style cottage with skylights, kitchenette and sauna

– a loft with a large floor space sometimes used by musicians and dancers, and views to east and west

– a writing studio

– garden-facing rooms

– a library of 2,000+ books

– art collection

– live-in house manager

– free landline phone calls within NZ

– weekly cleaning service

We invite applications from creative practitioners and researchers to undertake self-funded and self-catering residencies.

We focus on supporting creative practitioners as they undertake their projects.

We also seek to create connections between artists and the nearby communities through Open Studio Days, readings, radio talks, exhibitions, school visits, workshops, and more.

Our minimum residency period is one week and maximum is 3 months.

Description of Organisation:

Our mission is to give practitioners the space and time to foster serious creative work. We also create connections between our international and national artists and the local communities.

We are within easy travelling distance to the capital city of Wellington and 20 minutes drive to the nearest small city of Masterton with its regional art museum. Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre, to which residents enjoy complimentary entry, is a short walk away.

Residency fee: NZ$280-$400 a week plus NZ$40 a week if the resident has no vehicle. Linens, bedding and internet provided, as well as free weekly cleaning service and free landline telephone calls within New Zealand.

Complimentary pick-up and drop-off in Masterton (nearest city) or Palmerston North.

A live-in House Manager and artist/writer supports residents and helps facilitate connections.

An extensive library of 2,000+ books is available to all.

    How to reach by plane: Fly to Auckland then domestic flight to Wellington, then train to Masterton (where you will be picked up by car for 20min drive to NZPS).Fly to Palmerston North (where you will be picked-up by car for 60 minute drive to NZPS).
    How to reach by train: If flying into Wellington, take the Wairarapa Line train (90 min) to Masterton, the final stop. Train from Auckland can also be met at Palmerston North for 60 minute drive to NZPS.
    How to reach by car: We are on State Highway 2 (SH2) that links Wellington and Palmerston North.We are two km north of the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre, and two km south of the white ANZAC Memorial Bridge. We are signposted with a yellow/orange sign.
