Located in Hyrynsalmi (Kainuu province, Finland), Mustarinda-residency offers rooms for artists, writers and researchers of varying fields. Available for rent are four artist studios and additionally three rooms suitable for researchers/writers.
Mustarinda is situated on the second highest summit in Kainuu, adjacent to the north-east edge of the Paljakka nature reserve. The surrounding view is of valuable, and in some places, completely untouched old-growth forests. Paljakka and Mustarinda are also some of Finland??s snowiest areas. Mustarinda is the only inhabited house on the summit, 23 kilometers from the nearest village.

Description of Organisation:

The Mustarinda Association is a group of artists and researchers, whose goal is to promote the ecological rebuilding of society, the diversity of culture and nature, and the connection between art and science.

At the centre of our activity lie contemporary art, boundary-crossing research, practical experimentation, communication, teaching and events. The Mustarinda Association reaches towards a post-fossil culture by combining scientific knowledge and experiential artistic activity.

The Mustarinda Association is active both internationally and locally. Our activities are rooted at the Mustarinda house at the edge of the Paljakka nature reserve in Kainuu the house has versatile spaces for artist and researcher residencies, and is also the location for exhibitions and various events. Some of our activity also takes place in Helsinki.

    How to reach by plane: Mustarinda encourages people to travel by ecological means. We seek to combine transfers and to avoid flying and private car usage whenever possible.
    How to reach by train: By public transportation: Possible routes: 1. Helsinki-Kajaani (train or bus) Kajaani-Hyrynsalmi (bus) Hyrynsalmi-Mustarinda (pick up by Mustarinda staff or taxi) 2. Helsinki-Oulu (train or bus), Oulu-Kytömäki (bus) OR Oulu-Paltamo (train), Kytömäki/Paltamo-Mustarinda (pick up by Mustarinda staff or taxi). Trains: www.vr.fi Busses: opas.matka.fi, matkahuolto.fi, onnibus.fi. Residency entrants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Hyrynsalmi. They should also let know Mustarinda staff about arrival in advance. Picking-up/dropping off at Hyrynsalmi village preferred on the 1st weekday of the month (before 8 PM) and departing on the last weekday of the month. Small fee charged.
    How to reach by car: Route 1: When arriving from Kajaani, drive towards Kuusamo until you reach Hyrynsalmi. From Hyrynsalmi follow the signs leading toward Ukkohalla. At Ukkohalla do not turn towards the ski resort, but continue driving ahead on the asphalt route toward Paljakka. 5 km after Ukkohalla there is sign to the left JYRKKÄ & Mustarinda. Turn there. Drive up the steep hill and continue for 3 km until you reach Mustarinda on the right. Route 2: When arriving from Oulu, drive towards Kajaani. Around Utajärvi turn towards Puolanka. Drive through Puolanka towards Paltamo until there there is a HOIKANVAARA sign on the left. Follow this route until you reach an UKKOHALLA sign on the left. Turn here and follow this route for 9 km and turn right when there is a JYRKKÄ & Mustarinda sign. Drive up the steep hill and continue for 3 km until you reach Mustarinda on the right. NOTE: During snowy season use Lietekylä route instead of Jyrkkä.
