The program is structured for maximum time in the village, utilizing the ruins as classroom and work space. Dinners are taken family style at the village taverna and group outings have been organized to tour an archeological site and visit several of the numerous breathtaking beaches. At the end of each session an exhibition is mounted at the Agios Ioannis Cultural Center, with a corresponding reception in which the residents of the village and surrounding villages are invited to celebrate with the artists.
The Mudhouse Residency is designed to provide a cultural immersion: living, working and dining in the mountain village of Agios Ioannis, on the Greek island of Crete. The residency is inclusive to a number of artistic disciplines, with the facilities to accommodate studio artists, painters, printmakers, photographers, writers, poets, dancers, musicians, choreographers and composers.
The residency program is ideal for professional artists with an established practice seeking the time and space to realize an individual project. The residency includes 24 hr access to a spacious studio facility, practice space with athletic flooring, or access to the Music house grand piano, depending on the artist’s discipline. We welcome non-studio artists as well, as our residency provides the time and structure to focus on a non-studio based project, be it a novel, screenplay, video, or photographic series. The village is abundant in charming gardens and writing nooks.
Meals are served family style and group trips have been organized to tour ancient Minoan ruins, visit a Florentine monastery, swim in the Libyan sea and hike the Thripti mountain range. Artists are invited to present a slideshow lecture or reading on their work and participate in a closing exhibition.
The Mudhouse Residency is proud to have hosted international artists from all corners of the globe, including the United States, Ireland, Canada, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and the Netherlands, in disciplines as diverse as painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, writing, acting, video, interactive installation, music and dance.
