Metropolitan Fukujusou ( It means “Ice Adonis”)

Name of Residency: Metropolitan Fukujusou

Significance of activity here

As this old house was built in a time when Japan was not rich yet, the inside structure is simple and minimal. One of the artists who stayed here gave me a review that he felt something like Zen by being in this simple and minimal space, this simple lifestyle that seems comfortable after he got used to it, and the pure beauty in it, and he seemed to be able to have new inspirations. (It’s never convenient and not comfortable in some situations, but,)

Such an experience is just one example, but it would be pleasure if you can experience the Japanese traditional life which is being lost little by little even now in Kyoto and feel something from them.

Also, this house is located in a cultural area (inside 5min by walk) with 4 Art Museums (Kyoto National Museums, Kyoto City Museums and the Annex, Hosomi-Museums, Kansai Bijutsu-in (kanbi.org), Kyoto Prefectural Library, Kyoto City  Theater (Rohm Theater), Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts, Kanze hall (Noh theater), Kyoto City Zoo, Kyoto City International Foundation. Besides there are many scenic spots such as famous temples and shrines.  They will be useful for a change of your pace and your mood.

We welcome people who can enjoy the experience of a different culture lifestyle.

Ps, it may be off topics to you but,

A meeting of Zazen has been held at Nanzen-ji Temple (original of Zen-ji Temple, World Heritage), a 15-minute walk from this house. Free of charge but from am 6.

(It’s twice or once in each month, 2nd and 4th Sunday, however it’s off on 4th Sun. Dec. and 2nd Sun. Jan.  )

about “Zazen”,

It’s a basic method of practicing Zen, performing mental unification in a posture that is correct in Buddhism.

Also, it may be translated as Meditation, but meditation and Zazen that close eyes and think are different concepts.

Zazen is an act of correcting the posture with siting cross-legged on the cushion, and the body, breathing and the mind are adjusted and rid oneself of all worldly thoughts for open up new mental world (Buddhahood; Satori).

Please try to experience if you have intrest it
