Name of Residency: Pfaelzer Hof Artist Residencies

The Pfaelzer Hof is an artist-led town and cultural development project, breathing new life into a quarter of Idar-Oberstein in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. The Pfaelzer Hof is a beautiful old hotel which was rescued, with the help of public funding, from demolition and renovated in 2010.

The town of Idar-Oberstein has an interesting history as a centre for gem stone trade and jewellery manufacturing, a specialised tradition and expertise that continues today. The town has elements urban decay, immigration and former wealth, giving it an edge, as well as many contrasts.

Over the past few years our three spacious apartments and exhibition space have attracted international visitors from across the globe, including authors, visual artists and jewellery designers from the USA, Canada, Argentina and Europe.

We have now expanded our offering by creating a fourth apartment, painting studio and highly-visible project space and gallery.

Residency Programme since: 2013
Description of Organisation:

We curate a programme of artists, writers and composers in residency. We are committed to developing contemporary arts practices and offer curatorial support, engaging in critical and reflective dialogue with our artists, our audiences and the changing sense of place that the Pfaelzer Hof bears witness to.

We endeavour to create opportunities for residents to meet, discuss and present work to each other and to members of the public. Public readings, exhibitions and performances can be arranged at the Pfaelzer Hof or at other locations in the town of Idar-Oberstein.

The Pfaelzer Hof provides artists with spacious accommodation in one of its four apartments and the house has a sunny outdoor terrace, which residents share. The house has stunning views of the town, castle and surrounding woodland. The apartments have large windows and excellent natural light.

We are happy to receive residency enquiries and applications via email to:

We also regularly publish specific Calls, which we invite artists to respond to. Residency fees vary and will be published alongside our Calls.

We also host work exchange residencies and may at times award a residency bursary.
