Kalakhetra (Perform Odisha) residency is an interactive and immersive program where artists live along side village artists/craft people. During the residency artists will have the opportunity to learn a variety of arts and crafts in the form of patachitra , tassar painting, palm leaf engraving , paper mache , cow dung toys , dhokara (brass casting) ,stone carving , wood carving , patch work(modern applique), ganjapa playing cards, coir toys and teracuta. There is also shared studio space for artists to make their own work outside of the offered workshops/programs.

Living in the village gives artists direct access to many of the rich and inspiring cultural events which occur throughout India- artists will see Idols being built and enjoyed in celebrations, can take part in community meals, and can enjoy dancing and other community programs.

Kalakhetra provides local accommodations, food, and instructors to participants. Our main program is 5 weeks long from February 1 to March 7th,2018.

We are accepting applications for the 5 week group residency from now until December 16th.

It is possible to visit solo or in a small group during the rest of the year and to customize the instruction you wish to receive while in the villiage. Contact us if you would like to set up your own residency plan, separate from the main 5 weeks.

Description of Organisation:

Kalakhetra Internataional Artist&rsquos Residency is an artist run residency that seeks to bring western and other international artists into collaboration and exchange with the visual artists of Raghurajpur, a cultural villiage in Odisha (Orrisa) India. Staff for the program consist of two villiage artists: Sundarshan Swain (master stone carver) and Raghunath (Choi) Das (master palm leaf carver) , international coordinator: Emily Schuhmann (metalsmith and adjunct professor), and state coordinator Mahavir (Anu) Anjan Gourab.

As a working international collaboration, the program blends local workshops arranged by Sundarshan and Choi with excursions, traditional studio time, and critiques/conversations arranged by Emily.

(in your local currency): We encourage participants to apply for travel and residency grants in their home countries and are able to provide letters of support and affiliation to any applicant accepted into the program. These letters are acceptance letters sent Via email. We do not fill in applications for the attendees or provide any direct financial support.

    How to reach by plane: It is recommended that artist fly into Bhubaneshwar and travel via automobile/auto rickshaw to Raghurajpur. Artist&rsquos are responsible for cost of travel to and from Raghurajpur, Orissa, India. As a courtesy, RIA/CE will meet arriving artists at the airport or train station in Bhubaneshwar and obtain transportation — car or auto rickshaw — to Raghurajpur for them. (Transportation will be at the artist&rsquos expense).In order to extend this courtesy, the international coordinator must be advised of arrival and departure schedules as soon as they are obtained. *** Be advised that it is often LESS expensive to fly from your international destination into Delhi and then separately book an Air India or Indigo flight to Bhubaneshwar.
    How to reach by train: Artists wishing to travel to Raghurajpur via train (once in India) can do so from many of the major hubs nearby. There are stations in Puri and Bhubaneswar where trains can be accessed.
