We invite artists working in all mediums – writers, photographers, illustrators, textile artists, painters, actors, designers, developers, food entrepreneurs, etc. – to come to Ólafsfjörður to participate in projects, exhibitions and events during the winter season, to get inspiration from the environment, from the locals and from each other bringing all your ideas into a multicultural and disciplinary melting pot. We run different group projects from beginning of October to the end of February and we have set up has themes as trolls, moving lights, festivities- traditions and celebrations, mandala and meditation, ice and fire. Wee are however open for individual requests and open for applications for other periods of the year. Included in the price is pickup and drop off in Reykjavik every month and a warm daily meal 6 days pr. week.
Two of the rooms at the residence have a small working/studio space with a table. Working space is available in the cellar of the coffeehouse. Artists have the possibility to use the Art and working facilities at the Junior High School in the village. Artists are expected to bring all tools, equipment, materials needed for their stay. Proper waste disposals and fire-safe containers are provided.
Kaffi Klara itself will be used as an exhibition venue. Furthermore next to the coffeehouse is a small museum – Pálshús- with space for exhibitions. The Cultural Center run by the community is at the other side of the road and furthermore there are many possibilities at the Secondary School for using it as a venue and as a workingspace.
Collaboration to be made with “Kaktus” in Akureyri, an art and culture collective in Akureyri, with “Ljóðasetrið” – the Poetry Center in Siglufjörður and there is a possibility of using venues in Akureyri.

An official agreement has been done with the high school in town, where both visual arts, photography and music is essential and forms an important part of school work.

Description of Organisation:

Kaffi Klara Art residence is a perfect creative spot for living an artistic experience in North of Iceland in a small village not far from the polar circle and along the Arctic Coast Way. The residence is situated in the old post office in the centrum of Ólafsfjörður, a small village of aprox. 800 inhabitants that has an active community in sports, handcrafts, music and lots of social and voluntary engagements of different kinds. In the house there is also a coffeehouse that offers meals and dinners, as well as nice coffee, homemade cakes, local beer. Different events are held at the coffeehouse such as bingo evenings, knitting meetings, concerts and other social events. You will find yourself submerged in very a special environment in Northern Iceland with great and unique possibilities to work, all nearby, e.g. beach, educational centers, harbour, factories, lonely valleys and lakes, helpful and friendly people.
