The IRIS Artist Coaching Residency in Greece: time, space and support!

Immerse yourself in an inspiring studio environment in the Greek countryside. The IRIS ART CENTRE offers you a unique opportunity to create art and discover new trails in the development of your own artistic expression. Situated in the foothills of Parnitha National Park, a protected mountainous area filled with wildlife and pine trees, just outside Athens, Greece, the IRIS ART CENTRE provides an ideal environment for self-reflection and intensive artistic learning and research.

Come and enjoy a concentrated work period (1-6 weeks) at the IRIS ART CENTRE to research and expand your artistic practice. With years of experience in artistic talent development, we will support you to develop your full artistic potential.

The IRIS Artist Coaching Residencies are open to beginning and established artists, students and creatives of all ages and backgrounds. The Residency is situated in the private home of artist/art educator Annette Luycx, on a large estate in the midst of olive groves and vineyards near the village of Afidnes at a 30 minute driving distance from the center of Athens. The natural atmosphere of peace and silence give ample opportunity for concentrated work. Two hours of daily artistic coaching (Monday through Friday) is included in the residency cost.

Artists have their own private room with bathroom and a shared studio space. The center also has an outside studio, and an area of 2,5 acres of natural environment ideal for building land art projects. We welcome up to three artists at a time. This is a residency program for people who want to be alone and work. It is very quiet here, and there are never more than three artists at the same time. Partners of artists are welcome (at extra costs), and can follow a cultural programme in the morning on Greek culture, history and social reality if they like.

Accommodations consist of double bedrooms with their own bathroom, (two bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms), a cooled, light-infused studio, home cinema, an Art Gallery and Art Library. The villa is surrounded by expansive verandas ideal for lounging and al fresco dining. The menu consists of Greek dishes, prepared with olive oil and fresh vegetables from the garden, local meat, fruit, whole grain bread, honey, yogurt and cheese, and of course, the estate’s own distinctive white wine. Coffee, tea, mineral water and juices are available the whole day. On the 2,5 acre estate are four friendly dogs and two cats, who live outside. The dogs can be restricted to a separate area for people who do not like dogs.

The residency is situated 3 minutes by car from the local train station that brings you to Athens, where museums and galleries give plenty of new inspiration for your artistic work. It is no trouble for us to drop you off at the train station or to pick you up. It takes a 25 minute train ride to get to the center of Athens, with the Acropolis, the new Acropolis Museum, the Archeological Museum, the ancient Agora, cosy old Plaka and Monastiraki Flea Market, and the museums of Contemporary Art, Cycladic Art, Benaki, Byzantine Art etc. In weekends artists may choose to go to the beach near Marathon at a 30′ drive to the East from the Iris Art Centre, to visit Delphi, Mycene, Nauplion or Epidaurus, or go to islands such as Aegina, Hydra or Spetses taking a fast hydrofoil boat from Pireas, the port of Athens.

Rediscover the artist within under the guidance of an artistic mentor for as many weeks as you like, or go for the total artistic make-over (6 weeks). A stay at the IRIS Artist Coaching Residency is an especially rewarding experience that offers artists

– clearing of the lens
– finding a new focus
– setting new artistic goals
– writing a new artistic statement

You will make new discoveries in the development of your artistic potential through identifying and tapping into your artistic sources, exploring deeper layers, new visions, concepts and practices with the help of an artistic coach.

To apply write a residency statement (about 500 words) describing the reason you would like to join a residency and your goal what you would like to discover or work on during your stay with us. We would also welcome pictures of old or recent work, as well as your CV. All this information will facilitate a focused artistic mentoring during your stay with us.

Description of Organisation:

The IRIS ART CENTRE is a place for artistic education and coaching in Greece. We organize summer art workshops and artist residencies in a quiet natural location in Greece. The center is specialized in artistic education and coaching of artists, students and creatives of all ages and abilities. The center is situated on a large estate in the midst of olive groves and vineyards near the village of Afidnes at a 30 minute driving distance from the center of Athens. It is part of the private home of artist/art educator Annette Luycx. In our residencies you get all the guidance and encouragement you need to work on your artistic expression and the development of your personal artistic voice. Residencies are full board so you have the possibility to work concentrated for long stretches of time, and get into a flow.

The IRIS ART CENTRE was founded by Annette Luycx M.Ed, a graduate of MICA, Baltimore. She has specialized in artistic coaching. Purpose of the IRIS ART CENTRE is to support artists and art-students of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, in gaining increased self-awareness and understanding of their individual creative process, and to promote artistic growth and development of their artistic voice. Annette Luycx has travelled extensively and studied fine arts, theatre and ceramics with many international artists and art educators all over the world. Originally from the Netherlands, she lives and works in Athens as an artist and free lance art educator, organizing art courses and art workshops for adults in Greek and English. Co-founder of the IRIS ART CENTRE is Andonis Papadantonakis. He has studied Philosophy and Anthropology in the Netherlands, and is an expert on Greek culture and history. He has been organizing summer language courses in Greece for 15 years. He speaks fluent Greek, English and Dutch.

The IRIS ART CENTRE of took its name from the ancient goddess Iris. In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other, and into the depths of the sea and the underworld.

As a goddess, Iris is associated with communication, messages, the rainbow and new endeavors. Iris personifies the free movement and exchange of thought, bearing the gift of divine inspiration, which strikes suddenly like the startling appearance of a rainbow in the sky.

Like the rainbow’s infinite diversity of hues of color, the IRIS ART CENTRE seeks to gather people from all over the world and to be a place of artistic education, exchange, experimentation, and production. A place that is open to inspiration, creativity… and ever new messages from the gods!

We welcome artists with limited mobility. The building, studio, bedrooms, bathrooms, the swimming pool and surrounding natural environment are all wheelchair-accessible. The sink in the studio can be used by people in a wheelchair. The Centre has an elevator.
