Open to artists, writers, scholars and other creative practitioners, residents at the ICA work in private studio or other workspaces for periods of time ranging from 2 weeks to 3 months. Residents benefit from the proximity of ICA?s other programs, which include an active Studio School for serious art students and Study Abroad programs offering Studio Art, Italian language, Culinary Arts, Classics and Music History. Facilities for drawing, painting , sculpture, printmaking and non-darkroom photography are available. Weekly model sessions, landscape painting excursions, an active visiting artist calendar with some of the leading practitioners in their fields, concerts, lectures and films compliment the program. Weekly excursions to cultural sites in Rome, Florence, Assisi and other nearby locations are included. The residency allows for uninterrupted time for work as well as a close knit community of participants. Each residency concludes with an exhibition at our gallery. Monte Castello is a historic hill town where residents stay in a restored 12th century convent. Residents often articulate with local people, thus developing an understanding of Italian culture both historical and contemporary. Typical festivals and other local activities enliven the program and allow for immersion into the rhythms of life in Italy. We feel it is especially important to help artist with families and make every effort to accommodate their wishes to work with or part from other family members while working at our program. The history of art and culture in Italy feature prominently in our program.
