The Institute (IRAA) originated from various research activities by the staff in the school of Applied Art and Design, now New Craft Object Design, as well as the Laboratory for Illustration and Animation, which is a specialist area in the School of Communication Design. It was founded by the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences on 30 January 2009 as an artistic and scientific research institution.

The Institute’s international Artist in Residence programme furthers the development of young artists and scholars. In the programme the Institute acts as a host for young artists working in the field of applied arts who have to be self supporting or seek funding from other bodies like the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), art associations, foundations and so on.
