Tetouan, Morocco is the ideal art-making location. Tetouan is a jewel of a city, situated in the North of Morocco, on the North-Western tip of Africa. It is nestled up against the Mediterranean Sea in a beautiful valley where two mountain ranges meet. After visiting many other Moroccan cities, many people say that Tetouan is one of the most beautiful cities in the country. Its old city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history and culture, fairly untouched by modern development and tourism. Tetouan is the home of Morocco’s most prestigious (and only!) National Institute of Fine Art and has been described as a city where cultural events spring up at a grassroots level in a way that is rarely seen in this part of the world. Almost every street reveals a unique view of either the Rif mountains or the ancient walled city built on the hillside above the river valley.
This residency is situated in what used to be the home of a big family in the relatively small urban center of Tetouan, Morocco, about 3 minutes walk from two of the main gates of the ancient walled city. With 3 shared studios and a gallery/multipurpose space, a small salon, woodshop space, resource room, kitchen and offices, Green Olive Arts can accommodate 6 artists during regular self-directed residency seasons of 3-6 weeks length, and 8-10 artists during special annual themed residency programs and faculty led study abroad use. All studios have large windows & balconies allowing tons of sunlight and air into the spaces where creatives are at work. Staff are available to support creative proposals, help artists find what materials they need and network within the city.

Since the doors opened in 2013, GOA has hosted over 160 artists from over 27 different countries and the collaborations and relationships with the local community have been both countless and priceless!
