Edition/Basel is a 12 day program for artists working in intaglio, relief, lithography and letterpress techniques at the Druckwerk studio in Basel, Switzerland. Each session has a theme, which is chosen collaboratively and interpreted individually by the artists. An exhibition is presented at the end of the period at one of three local museums or galleries: the Papiermühle Museum, Salon Mondial at Atelier Mondial Basel, or the Kaskadenkondensator Gallery.
Participants are expected to have some hands-on experience with printmaking.
Edition/Basel is a printmaking program for professional artists. The program seeks to foster both creative and socio-cultural exchanges through its two summer sessions, in which 10 international artists come together over a shared interest in the graphic arts.
Good working conditions are extremely important for artists to be their most creative. Therefore it is always the aim of Edition/Basel to provide facilities with well-maintained machines, fresh ink and chemicals, and a variety of paper and other materials necessary for an array of printmaking processes.
We encourage our residents to experiment. Is your print work an installation? Does it have another element, like sound, or a performance? Does your piece exist outside the gallery, and move into the city of Basel? We welcome your trials, failures, and curious vision regarding ways of bringing printmaking into the world at large.
Started in 2012, and running two sessions per summer since 2016, the founders of Edition/Basel, Megan Adie and Margarit Lehmann, strive to constantly improve the programs, and also to reach out to further diversify their community. To this end, Margarit has organized and secured funding for a 12 day program in Havana, Cuba, and has also forged connections with printmakers in Yerevan, Armenia. The results of these collaborations have been shown in exhibitions in Havana, Zürich, Basel, and San Francisco. Several similar projects are currently in the works.
