Driftwood Studios is a family run self funded residency. We offer private and shared studio spaces to other sculptors, fine artists, potters, writers and other creatives in an inspiring natural environment against the coastal dune forest of South Africa.
Driftwood Studios has private work spaces to develop be it in wood, metal, stone or ceramic media. We have also hosted writers and photographers. The 6 x 14m Gallery space is a fine rehearsal area for performing artists. Each residency is designed according to the requirements and inspiration of the artist and may change direction after the artist arrives!
Yoga and meditation classes are held regularly. Other activities include canoe safaris for birders, where you could easily spot all five species of kingfishers, a host of raptors, dolphins and whales. After a tough day doing art, treat yourself to very affordable massage therapy. The incredible bushman rock art can be visited with our local expert guide.
We can connect you with the network of artists in the area, especially those relevant to your work. An exhibition or community contact workshop is encouraged which we will arrange for you.
Driftwood is in the village of Rainbow Valley, adjacent to pristine coastal dune forest and a few minutes walk to the sea. The beach has dramatic sand dunes, beautiful stones and of course driftwood to inspire and refresh all visitors. There are good local shops 5km away, including a supermarket, butchery, pharmacy, eateries, a fuel stop etc. and the city of East London is 20km.
Stay in one of two self-catering cottages including private or shared workstation in accommodation or studio. Forest House is a two bedroom unit with lounge/dining/kitchen. Driftwood Treehouse is thatched and has 1 bedroom and a small kitchen/diner. Students or those staying for up to 2 weeks are welcome to live with the family in their own en-suite. Partners and family are welcome as we gently encourage all to explore their creative side. Prices are very reasonable, similar to a back packers but with residency support and mentoring to make a success of your stay as an artist and as a life experience!
Fresh wholesome and sustainable food is a passion at Driftwood and we grow fruits such as bananas, protected as best we can from the forest monkeys (!), and our own salad vegetables and herbs. Enjoy free range eggs from our own ‘happy hens’. Residents are asked to recycle and contribute organics to the garden compost. Enquire via firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to hearing your dreams and plans and helping them come about.
Driftwood Studios hosts self-funded but low cost residencies for up to 4 artists and their partners/family in facilities established and used by George Kockott, Sculptor, and his wife Claire in beautiful natural coastal surroundings, near East London, South Africa.
