Dragon Dance Theatre 2020 collective creation, residency, Our Pan American Puppetry Arts Institute, on the theme of historical migrations, will take place in Quebec during the month of August.

This year’s experimental laboratory residence will be on a very small scale with a maximum of ten participants. For that reason we will not be accepting applications from the public. That is to say we have reached full capacity .

We post this information to let our friends and followers know that we are working this year, 2020 and that we are intending to hold another residential project open to artists from a wider circle in 2021. Where and when that residency will take place is yet to be determined.

As soon as we have a 2021 plan we will post it. Thanks to all of you who have participated in the past and all of you who hope to participate in the future. The attached photos are of a few residential projects that have been successfully completed.

and below, we have left the description of the 2019 residency, this gives an idea of the kind of work we are upto, and what you can expect for 2021.  Don’t hesitate to write to us. Go visit our web page, we are looking forward to hearing from you!

The NEXT RESIDENCY IS PLANNED FOR SUMMER 2019 – August 4 to September 02.

Here is your opportunity to do an artist residency focusing on theatre, dance, music and mask-making,

Dragon Dance is organizing an intense, experimental and improvisational theatre lab, plus a plastic arts workshop, where we will make masks, sets and costumes. It will be a fully integrated intense experience, working with other artists from different parts of the world, as well as with local people.

Together we will imagine, and realize our own creative Utopia. We will make a peaceful, historically relevant, community art event based on a myth. We will dance and sing, make music, break bread, laugh, and inspire one another, while working in our chosen fields, to make a memorable public performance. We will have fun. We will work. We will create our own world of cultural exchange, cooperation and creation.

This is a fully integrated, in depth, immersion a working environment, shoulder to shoulder with other artists from around the world, musicians, dancers, actors, puppeteers.
We work together in all aspects of the production, from choosing the story to creating the masks, improvising the scenes and inventing the music.
This is a 4 week project (some exceptions can be made for people who can only attend 2 or 3 weeks). At first, in the mornings, we work mostly on the plastic arts building the armatures and sculpting the forms of the masks with clay. After a few days, we can start to cover the first masks with paper-mach??, while other armatures are being built.
In the afternoons and early evening, we work on the story itself, studying the characters, defining the conflicts, and improvising the scenes. Everyone participates and enriches the group with their ideas and input. We use a method of socializing the roles as we study the stage, the scenes and the story.
As the weeks unfolds, we will start to use the finished masks on the stage and learn to manipulate these giant puppets. We will spend more and more time developing the story, while creating and integrating the music.
At the end of the workshop we will perform the show 3 times for the local public. By the end of the project, you will have gained a working knowledge of how a theatre works using the ideas, the strategies and theories of collective creation to develop and mount a performance.

The registration fee is 250 euros (approx 250 USD). This is non-refundable. Once you register, your place is reserved. Also, once you register, we can write an invitation letter which you can use to look for funding.

The 4 week residency fee is 1500 Euros (1700 USD) . This covers your tent space and meals, plus workshop fees as well as local transport between Toulouse and Launaguet (for arrivals and departures between 08:00 am and 09:00 pm).
Payments are made using PayPal or via bank transfer depending on your location.
(note that accommodation is tenting in a field there is water, solar showers and facilities available we will arrange for breakfast plus the main meal which is lunch, and a light evening supper.
