Dogo Residenz für Neue Kunst is located in the Rathaus für Kultur, a cultural center in Lichtensteig, a small city (affectionately called Städtli by the inhabitants) and municipality in the heart Toggenburg region. Lichtensteig belongs with its 1900 inhabitants to the smaller municipalities of Switzerland. Nevertheless, with an area of around 2.82 square kilometers, it is larger than the countries of the Vatican and Monaco together. Lichtensteig has a historic center, is surrounded by a city wall, accessible by public transport (train, bus, post bus) and is an hour?s drive from Zurich Airport and Lake Constance.

Dogo Residenz für Neue Kunst provides living- and workspace for 12 artists yearly. Up to five artists can be admitted per month. Dogo is a unique combination of art production, exhibitions, mediation and a growing digital collection. Dogo builds a bridge in cooperation with the municipality of Lichtensteig, the local schools and cultural organizations between the art world and the inhabitants of Toggenburg.

The premises of the residency include an appartment with five rooms, a kitchen, a living area and a bathroom, an exhibition space and a shared studio outside of the house. In the house there are also studios and rehearsal rooms as well as the Rathausstube, a bistro that invites you to linger.

The artists receive a scholarship of 500 CHF. The costs for accommodation and studio space is covered. A stay lasts at least two, maximum five months.

Description of Organisation:

The Dogo Residenz für Neue Kunst is unique combination of art production, exhibtions, art mediation and a growing digital collection. The apartment at Rathaus für Kultur offers a living space for five young artists from around the world. They live and work during two, four or six month periods on site. The artspace at Rathaus für Kultur enables the artists to show the works they produce to an audience. The program enables the artists using the space to experiment with the exhibition of works-in-progress. The shared studio at the converted gym allows for the production of large-scale works. Dogo’s mission is to promote artists who want to develop their artistic practice and works. The location allows for a variety of responses from residents. Lichtensteig uniquely combines an urban and a rural character. The building itself is situated on a lively street within a bustling neighbourhood. Within walking distance industrial buildings are encountered, from which point on the hilly landscape begins. The small size of the municipality promotes art production in all kind of ways. Among other things, it serves as object of projection, a catalyst for thoughts and interventions. The exchanges created with the community are at least as important as the personal development of the artists themselves. This is the way to create works that transcend place, medium and time, and while containing and responding to questions that are anchored in the present.
