Name of Residency: Creator Square

Creator Square Johnstown is comprised of the following programs and services:

a. Artisan Residency: Duration is flexible, but the intended time frame is two years on site.

b. Creative Master: Every artisan, craftsperson or maker that is selected for the program is featured on the Creator Square website as a ‘Creative Master’ with links to personal websites. After successful completion of the residency, Creator Square issues a ‘Certificate of Creative Mastery.’

c. Individual Studios: Each Creative Master receives access to one of four individual studios and communal work areas and gallery space. Application fee: $35. The cost of a Creator Square residency is $200 per artist/per month. Creative Masters are asked to contribute towards that cost. One of the Creative master position is reserved for an on-site manager position who will receive their studio and the benefits of the residency at no cost in exchange for some day-to-day and planning responsibilities, mentored and managed by the executive director. This is a growth opportunity for an artist who wants to gain valuable administrative and leadership experience. When applying, please let us know that you would be interested in that option. We are flexible in our scheduling based on the individual artists needs.  Each unit is single or double occupancy – teams of two artisans are encouraged to apply together.

d. Teaching and Learning Opportunities: Creative Masters will have paid teaching opportunities and access to business coaching and counseling.

e. Greater Johnstown Career & Technical Center (GJCTC): Like a local ‘Tech Shop’ membership, GJCTC provides access to tools and training throughout residency.

f. Connection to Allied Residencies: Successful completion of Creator Square residency provides favored status – an on ramp, so to speak – in application to an allied group of other regional residencies within the Creator Square Consortium, including Touchstone Center for Craft, Monmade, and the Center for Metal Arts, among others.

Other benefits include the opportunity, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and comparable salary ranges, to teach adjunct at local colleges, tech schools, and other educational centers, free craft materials and products that are either being discarded or due to be recycled by a variety of local manufacturers and vendors including Goodwill Industries and ACRP/Home Depot, etc., gallery exhibitions at Creator Square, and at local and regional art centers and galleries.

Residency Programme since: 2015
Description of Organisation:

Creator Square Johnstown is a unique artisan residency for between four and eight creative masters that forms the link connecting Johnstown’s creative community with its regional neighbors, with industrial and manufacturing infrastructure, and with local arts, culture, and entrepreneurial activity by establishing a focal presence in downtown’s Central Park. The residency is housed in the historic Parkview Building and includes access to a large variety of high tech and traditional tools, training, teaching opportunities, materials, and community. As a place where the community gathers to create, observe, learn, and share knowledge and skill sets, Creator Square fulfills the need for the type of creative collaboration that stimulates innovation and creativity. As a result of its presence and initiatives, subsequent partnerships between makers, education, and industry will provide the next stages of innovation as Johnstown embraces the new manufacturing economy of the future.
