The programme has come into being since June 2016 with the grateful support of The Mondriaan Fund, The Creative Industries Fund of the Netherlands which was initiated by the 2016 / Project based on The Creative Industries Agreement between The Kingdom of The Netherlands and Saga Prefecture as entered into from 2013. Saga Prefecture has welcomed four artists and four designers in Arita Town between June 2016 and August 2017. By bringing in artists and designers from overseas and offering them the freedom to explore and push their creative capabilities, We will create a platform in Saga Prefecture that acts as a focal point around which international creative talent will gather, in turn establishing Arita at the heart of a region synonymous with ceramic heritage yet still confidently placed at the forefront of global art and design. Arita is receiving artists and designers from Holland continuously in 2018, at the same time also the program will be open to receive more artists and designers from other countries next year.
The organizer is Saga Prefecture International Division and our residency is based at Saga Ceramic Research Laboratory in Arita. The laboratory was established in 1992
as the Center for Traditional and Creative Technology, Open to the Local Community
For the advancement of the regional ceramics industry.
Since then the Saga Ceramics Research Laboratory aims to become the center for traditional and creative support for the local community by providing support in the following areas: research and development, technical support, commercial support, and human resource development. In 2016, with the support of Saga Prefecture International Division, it acts as the base for the residency programme.
