Residency Programme since: 2014
Description of Organisation:

Cerdeira – Home for Creativity is a community of arts based in a very special place: Cerdeira, one of the classified schist villages in Serra da Lousã, and a secular small place surrounded by fresh brooks and silence, in an ocean of mountains in the centre of Portugal.

This village was abandoned in the late 70’s for social and economic reasons and its rural architectural heritage is now almost completely restored, considering the importance of ecological and sustainable aspects, and the aim to give it a new live and meaning. The fifteen traditional houses have all the comfort of a modern one, but with no distractions (there’s no TV and internet access is limited to Café da Videira and Atelier). Each of the houses was intervened by contemporary artisans who created parts and decorations inspired by the village and its natural surroundings. Besides the houses you can find a oven-house that can be used for baking and traditional cooking, a craft gallery, a library, a laundry, a coffee and our shared studios prepared for nearly all kinds of art work with special wood and ceramic facilities.

In 2015 we invited the Japanese ceramist and kiln builder Masakazu Kusakabe to lead the construction of his woodfiring Sasukenei Smokeless Kiln for ceramics (800 L) and today, the kiln is part of the equipment for artists and a unique masterpiece in Portugal that recovers ancient techniques used in contemporary ceramics dramatically glazed experience through 36 hours at 1600 degrees: more than firing it’s an experience.

In 2017 Cerdeira Arts and Crafts School was launched with the core mission to become a space for teaching traditional techniques that come out of intemporal lineages, and a space for creativity and art making aligned with contemporary dialogue.

Cerdeira Arts and Crafts Schools group of experienced Masters share an artistic and cultural pedagogy based on values of respect for the voice and sensibility of each individual as well as the lineage and tradition of their artistic area.

We offer structured courses based on a deep understanding of the principles involved in the aesthetic, creative and manual learning processes and we involve live practical demonstrations, visual displays and lectures, as well as the time spent practicing together, with moments of reflection and exchange.

The largest building in the village is the House of Arts – a four floor building that hosts our creative group activities – was rebuilt using only schist stone, clay and chestnut wood.

In short, the aim of the project is the promotion of creative tourism while encouraging arts, crafts, traditional techniques and nature intersections.

Cerdeira is one of the most active members of the Schist Villages Network. Today it’s a privileged place for artists, to stay and get inspired at our residencies, to exhibit at our annual contemporary craft exhibition Elementos à Solta – Art meets Nature and a place for all people who love nature, who like to live new experiences, learn old craft techniques or simply want to find contemporary ways to express themselves.

The identity and the authenticity of the place, and the positive energy and persistence of this quiet international association, is what makes it so special. We want to be surrounded by positive energy!
