Centro Colombo Americano

The visual arts programme consists of a permanent exhibitions programme of work by both Colombian and international artists. Most artists visit Colombia to participate in activities with the local audience which includes both artists and others interested in the arts in general. Very much a community based programme, visiting artists in addition to working on their work, engage directly with local Colombians on many levels.
Background ?? Deseartepaz Program
The methodology of art or the search for beauty through art is a key tool for public school children and teenagers, in that it generates critical thinking skills when applied across the curriculum. For this subproject the Deseartepaz methodology is applied to the target communities of the BNC through socio-artistic labs. These labs heal, empower and serve as a compass for the autonomy of the participants. With the activities in Deseartepaz, we seek new paradigms where authenticity, sustainability and a sense of life to return to the participants through the art actions of the project.

Art Residency Colombo Americano, Community based art practices
Timeline of workshop: October 11th – November 4th, 2016
Timeline of exhibition: November 4th – December 9th, 2016

Description
Multi-disciplinary residency.
Art residencies are playing an important role in the construction of a global culture. Artists are traveling around the world to understand other contexts and are interpreting them form their own view. International artists identify perspectives we do not see as locals. From the Medell??n BNC, we would like to offer a space for participation of art residents by inviting international artists to work with our communities and thus build a culture of peace through the Deseartepaz methodology. It is our goal to invite one international/visiting artist to analyze our context and work with our communities that are part of Deseartepaz program.

Activities
The visiting artist/expert will stay in the city for a minimum of three weeks and will work with eight (8) high schools located in different areas of the city some of them identified as vulnerable and some others are private high schools. The visiting artist/expert will also work in close collaboration with eight (8) local artists that will lead the projects at each of the participating schools and programs.

At the end of the residency there will be an academic journey to at least 400 high school students where the topics and results of the lab will be presented.

Finally, upon conclusion of the above mentioned activities the artist will plan and develop an art exhibition showcasing the results of workshops, a printed catalog and an online documentary video in (http://www.colomboworld.com/desearte-paz). It is anticipated that this contemporary art exhibition will combine different views about peace through international exchange and ways in which art helps strengthen ties with global culture. The exhibition is part of a series of workshops addressed to children and young adults discussing topics such as promotion of leadership, human rights, multicultural identities, gender equality, non-violence, new alternative economics and ecology. These topics have been a success in the past ten years of Deseartepaz socio artistic laboratories opening questions about our reality and now with the art residency the Contemporary Art Gallery hopes to include more international views on social transformation through artistic practices.

Visiting Artist Selection
The art residency will be directed to artists who work with communities, with the aim of promoting one or several of the following topics: leadership, human rights, multicultural identities, gender equality, non-violence, new alternative economics and ecology. Artists of any artistic media will be accepted as long as his/her work is in line with the themes to be dealt with. The applicant must be willing to work with children and youth.
