The BARTR residence program invites artists working across a diverse range of fields to Budapest for 11 weeks. The program is held annually and hosts 10??15 international residents at one time.
The residency is uniquely characterized by an open, decentralized structure. Studios are located in different spaces throughout the central districts of the city, the exhibition takes place in several venues, and collaboration with other artists, studios, and civil organisations is encouraged and facilitated, for those residents who are interested.
In addition to residents?? self-directed work, a program of workshops aims to encourage collaboration, extend your practice and work towards a series of pieces to be exhibited during the final show. The workshop series are focussed on two movements central to underground cultural movements in Hungary, Central East Europe, and beyond: printmaking, zine and independent publishing, and experimental and DIY audio and sound. Artists of all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to apply.
Applicants will be selected by a jury comprised of Hungarian artists from different fields.
BARTR is an independent, non profit organisation made up of Budapest-based artists, curators, cultural managers, local businesses and cooperatives. We work with other residencies and cultural organizations in Hungary, the wider central European region, and beyond, to strengthen ties, create opportunities for creative collaboration and knowledge exchange.
We hold an annual international artist-in-residence program that seeks to encourage cross-cultural exchange between visiting and local artists, create opportunities for future cooperation and to provide a supportive, inspiring environment for new experiences within the unique cultural context of Budapest.
