Artscape Gibraltar Point

Artscape Gibraltar Point is an artist residency centre located in a former public school on the Toronto Islands, just a 10-minute ferry ride away from downtown. The facility is surrounded by acres of lush parkland and steps away from a beautiful sandy beach. Nearby is the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, Toronto??s oldest landmark.

Open year-round, Artscape Gibraltar Point offers two kinds of residencies: Self-directed Residencies and Programmed Residencies. Self-directed residencies are for individual artists seeking time and space to independently pursue their creative ventures. Programmed residencies are term stays organized around a particular theme or idea. They are often collaborative, are directed by a facilitator, and often (but not always) involve a final project or event.

Rentals at Artscape Gibraltar Point consist of a furnished private bedroom and studio. Amenities include a fully-equipped common kitchen, shared bathroom, laundry facilities, wireless internet, bicycle rentals for on-island excursions, and a beautiful beach on Lake Ontario.

Residency Programme since: 1999
Description of Organisation:

Artscape Gibraltar Point is Artscape??s most unique and tranquil property located in a secluded park setting with its own beachfront on Toronto Islands. Opened in 2000, the project was catalyzed by a group of Toronto Island residents who contacted Artscape when the historic former Toronto Island Public and Natural Science School was threatened with demolition. Working with the City of Toronto, Artscape created a new vision for the site that included an artists?? lodge and retreat centre, and long-term artist work studios.

Artscape is a not-for-profit organization that makes space for creativity and transforms communities. www.torontoartscape.org
