Pushkinskaya-10 art center / St. Petersburg Art Residency (SPAR)

Name of Residency: St. Petersburg Art Residency (SPAR)

The St. Petersburg Art Residency (SPAR) was founded in 2012 and became the city’s first residency program. It is located in the historical center of St. Petersburg in the Pushkiankays-10 art center, offering the participants a unique experience of living and working in a lively creative surrounding next to studios of local artists and musicians, independent galleries, a museum center and concert venues.

Every year SPAR welcomes over 30 art professionals from all over the world. Being part of SPAR is much more than just working in a guest studio. It means experiencing a whole artistic adventure by becoming a community member, exploring the city’s unique cultural landscape, and presenting one’s own art.

As a platform for transcultural communication, the program supports continuous exchange between artists and researchers of various disciplines with different artistic training and world-views.

Residency Programme since: 2012
Description of Organisation:

The art center Pushkinskaya-10 is a collective work of art, a monument to the victory of free culture over conformist Soviet ideology, and the country’s sole example of an independent and self-organized artist commune. It started in 1989 when a group of underground artists occupied a large building in the center of Leningrad and was later transformed into a multidisciplinary art center. During the thirty years of its existence, Pushkinskaya-10 has become a point of interest for local and international artists and collectives, and it continues to generate creative energy within its walls. Today the art center with a total area of over 4 500 sq. m. is home to a museum, archive, galleries, clubs, studios of artists and musicians, an international residency program, and other creative spaces.
