We aim to foster the production of contemporary art by offering a holistic rural environment where the process of each project is based on the individual art practice.

ANIMA can host up to 10 artists in each residency season

Residencies run February to December. Duration of the residency is 2 weeks.

ANIMA offers art residencies with accessible rates. Applicant artists are not restricted to focus on environmental issues during their stay, however we do give priority to proposals that engage with sustainability and ecology. ANIMA is surrounded by nature, is close to small communities, an eco village, natural hot springs, pre Hispanic sites, and also the culture of the city of Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico, which hosts some of the most important book fairs, films festivals, and folklore music festivals in Latin America.

Our residencies are self-directed, we offer the space and place for people to come and concentrate on their projects and research. We hope that the stay with us and the interactions with peer artists will be an exciting and motivating process.

Eligibility:

Our philosophy at ANIMA is to support sustainable living, culture and the arts, therefore we base our selections on artists who not only demonstrate artistic accomplishment, but also share these ideals. It is recommended to have a specific and well-conceived residency project in mind and are ready to embrace self-reliance for a residency in rural Mexico. We host national and international photographers, writers, visual and new media artists.

Residency Programme since: 2014
Description of Organisation:

The goals of ANIMA are inspired by the book Evening Thoughts, by Thomas Berry. Our name comes from the concept that ??anima? is what gave the first breath of life to the earth, and is what inspires our souls. This notion also has origins in ancient Greek civilization as the term is used to articulate ideas about humans existing with a soul. We believe that with you, we will be able to learn and cooperate to make this world a better place to live.

Within ANIMA??s walls we provide respite from a culture that is addicted to material gain and consumption. In fact, this is our primary goal and is at the heart of our existence.
