Artist-in-Residency.Catalunya (AIR.CAT) is an artist residency program organized around the physical exploration of the Catalan littoral and the production of art in response to this coastal exploration.
The program is an artist-run/publicly supported contemporary art residency based in the Catalan city of Tossa de Mar, a small town located just one and a half hours north of Barcelona at the base of the Costa Brava in the heart of Catalunya, Spain. The residency experience is focused on fusing creative production with outdoor physical interaction with the natural environment. Also offered is a private guided tour of The Sagrada Familia basiilica in Barcelona with its project director Jordi Fauli and a field trip to Dali’s studio in PortLligat
The Residency is semi-structured with a first week of kayak, snorkel, hiking excursions as well as field trips. Weeks 2 and 3 are mostly focused on the residents’ individual in-studio production; the final week is mostly dedicated to the installation of a group show at the Municipal Museum of Tossa de Mar.
Our Studio is located in a large open work-space across the street from the Acerbi Residence in Tossa. It includes a large kitchen, two restrooms, fantastic natural light, air-conditioning and free wifi. The final exhibition space is located in Tossa de Mar’s Municipal Museum, situated within the historic walls of the 13th century Villa Vella, the medieval wall and towers that enclose the original city village. The Tossa Municipal Art Museum is the first contemporary art museum in Spain. The efforts of AIR.CAT will be to refresh and continue this distinction for Tossa de Mar
Participating artists will produce art, design and creative work reflecting their own interests and personal projects to be presented in a public gallery exhibit at the Municipal Museum of Tossa on the last day of the program. The City of Tossa de Mar is a supporting partner of AIR.CAT through its City Hall/Cultural Affairs Department who are providing all physical spaces, stipends and other forms of logistical support to this residency.
Selection of participating residents is highly competitive through a portfolio and CV review. For specific information regarding submission deadlines and required submission materials, please go to the AIR.CAT website www.aircatstudio.org
AIR.CAT is open to all media in the visual, literary, musical or other artists and designers: architecture, drawing, painting, sculpture, music, poetry, collage, performance, installation, photography, digital, conceptual and site specific interventions. AIR.CAT is a Summer studio-based experience focused on the physical and cultural landscape of the Costa Brava Littoral. It is based in the city of Tossa de Mar, Spain and is coordinated and mentored by US-based artists Dennis Hollingsworth and Gerard Smulevich. The non-profit organization is funded by the City of Tossa de Mar and by private contributions. Residents are offered free lodging in 2-person shared rooms located in the landmark Acerbis residence, a Bauhaus-influenced design from 1945. The selected residents are also offered a 24/7 studio work-space and a 500 Euro cash stipend for production materials. AIR.CAT accepts six (6) residents per summer. The residency concludes with a well-attended, generously catered and broadly publicized group exhibition at the Municipal Museum of the City of Tossa de Mar.
