Mella Jaarsma’s Exhibition ‘In Ravel Out’ at Res Artis Office And Project Space

Opening 6pm, Thursday 5 September.

Res Artis, together with our generous benefactors Michael Schwarz and David Clouston, invite you to the opening of Mella Jaarsma’s exhibition, In Ravel Out.

Born in the Netherlands, Mella has lived in Yogyakarta since 1984, where she co-founded Indonesia’s first contemporary art space, Cemeti Art House, now called Cemeti Institute for Art and Society. She is an artist, curator and arts manager of International renown, and recently joined the Board of Res Artis.

Mella Jaarsma is known for her complex costume installations and her focus on forms of cultural and racial diversity embedded within clothing, the body and food. In Ravel Out features installations, photographic and video works that express Mella’s concern about the declining cultures of Indonesia and the environment. Mella examines the ephemeral life of an object and the ongoing regeneration of social and cultural patterns through language, clothing, architecture and ritual – and attempts to unravel these patterns’ meanings.

Mella Jaarsma’s works have been presented in exhibitions and art events internationally, including: ‘Dunia Dalam Berita’, Macan Museum, Jakarta (2019); the Thailand Biennale (2018); the 20th Sydney Biennale (2016); ‘The Roving Eye’, Arter, Istanbul(2014);); ‘Suspended Histories’, Museum Van Loon, Amsterdam (2013); ‘Singapore Biennale’, Singapore Art Museum (2011); and ‘GSK Contemporary – Aware: Art Fashion Identity’, the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2010). Her works have been acquired by institutions around the globe including the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) in Brisbane and the Singapore Art Museum.

Res Artis would like to thank Alex Pittendrigh for generously hosting Mella during her stay in Melbourne.

During the exhibition opening Mella’s installation works will be performed. A new publication will accompany the show, featuring an essay by Nuraini Juliastuti
