This June, under 24-hour daylight, nearly 200 artists, arts residency operators and cultural workers from more than 30 countries gathered for the first conference held in the Arctic by Res Artis. The conference, Exploring Sustainability Under the Midnight Sun, was hosted by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the City of Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland from 18 – 20 June.
The conference theme of sustainability was divided across a 3-day program. Focusing on indigenous residencies and ethical tourism, and intersections with science and technology. The program comprised around 30 local and international speakers, including Indigenous representatives from Finland, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Participants had the opportunity to engage with Sámi culture. Furthermore, we took excursions to nearby arts residency centres, the Arctic Circle, and even visit Santa Claus! Take a look at the summary video here!
We added three new board members and welcomed a new president – Lea O’Loughlin!
Most importantly in 2018 we grew to over 700 members in our network ranging from Indonesia to Greece, the UK to Taiwan! You can browse through them here.
2019 will be an even busier year, the field of artist residencies is only expanding and finding more complexities in its path. Res Artis will remain at the forefront of these changes.
In February 2019 we are hosting our next meeting Creative Encounters: Reimagining Residencies in Kyoto, Japan. Out hosts, the Kyoto City and Kyoto Art Center in cooperation with the Agency of Cultural Affairs, invite participants to Kyoto from 6 – 8 February 2019. Come and discuss the evolution of artists residency models and rapid expansion of the field with a wealth of experts and members from across Asia.
And whilst we are in Kyoto we will also launch our new website. Ensuring our network keeps you up to date on the newest developments in the field even faster!
We look forward to another year and everything it will bring!
