26 Wood Land School – What colour is the present?
We should meet in the mountains to investigate: What colour is the present?
Things are happening now, so it must be contemporary.
Duane Linklater transforms a small office/studio space located above the Necessities convenience store (“Native Crafts, Fireworks, Cigarettes”) on a reserve in Northern Ontario into the Wood Land School, an open and contemplative space for the present. He invites artists, writers, and musicians to participate, give talks, exhibit art, screen films and video, to share and to talk. He decides that this activation and investigation of space is an ongoing and never-ending task. He also decides that it must be portable, because ideas float around freely and walls do not and should not obstruct their behavior.
We should meet in the mountains to investigate: What colour is the present?
On a weekly basis, the School will convene to share work, performance, poetry, dance, video, mix-tapes, songs, drink, and food to determine what colour is the present. Our determinations will be guided by our languages, where we come from, our city lives, our rural lives (or in between). We will get together in the mountains to see what becomes of this.
We should strive to create new and adventurous meanings for the Wood Land School.
Please note: Enrolment to this program is limited to individuals of Aboriginal descent (status, non-status, Métis or Inuit).
